Description

Fogo FH 5541 single-phase generator – 3.9 kW with a Honda GX 270 engine

Fogo FH 5541 is a portable 230 V generator (a machine that turns the energy of a combustion engine into electricity) with a maximum output of 3.9 kW and a rated output of 3.5 kW. It is powered by an air-cooled, four-stroke Honda GX 270 engine with manual start. The generator weighs 65 kg, measures 650 × 520 × 490 mm and sits in a tubular frame. Use it for power tools on site, lighting and pumps, or to power a house during a grid outage.

3.5 kW rated power and a Honda GX 270 engine

At 230 V and 50 Hz the generator delivers a rated current of 15.2 A. According to the manufacturer's data sheet the alternator has a starting current of 300 %, THD (harmonic distortion of the voltage) of up to 4 % and class H insulation, so it copes with the short rise in demand when tools start. The Honda GX 270 engine has a 0.6 l oil sump.

About 2.4 hours of running time per tank

The tank holds 5.3 l of petrol and consumption at 75 % load is 2.2 l/h, which gives about 2.4 hours of continuous operation (5.3 l ÷ 2.2 l/h). The sound power level Lwa is 96 dB(A).

Sockets and protection as standard

As standard you get two 230 V 16 A sockets rated IP 67, an overload protection, an oil level sensor and an hour meter. The alternator has an ingress protection rating of IP 54, so it is protected against dust and splashing water.

No AVR: when that is enough

The FH 5541 has voltage regulation of +5 / -10 % and no electronic AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator, which keeps the voltage within a narrow range). It suits power tools, lighting and pumps. For sensitive electronics such as computers or controllers choose a model from the category 230 V generators with AVR stabilization.

FH 5541 or FH 5001

Both models have a Honda GX 270 engine, a 5.3 l tank and the same frame. The FH 5001 gives more power (4.2 kW maximum, 3.8 kW rated) and weighs 53 kg, while the FH 5541 has a higher alternator protection rating (IP 54 instead of IP 23) at a weight of 65 kg. The FH 5541 replaces the discontinued FH 4541 with the same output.

Accessories matched to the FH 5541

For this model Fogo lists the A-R650 transport kit (two wheels and two handles), an exhaust hose 2.5 m long and 50 mm in diameter, and a service pack with an air filter, a spark plug and engine oil.

Questions and answers

What can the Fogo FH 5541 generator power?

The Fogo FH 5541 has a maximum output of 3.9 kW and a rated output of 3.5 kW at 230 V, which is a rated current of 15.2 A. You can run power tools, lighting and pumps as long as their combined power does not exceed 3.5 kW. Electric motors draw more current when starting than when running, so leave a power reserve. According to the Fogo data sheet the alternator has a starting current of 300 %, which helps at start-up.

How long does the Fogo FH 5541 run on one tank?

The fuel tank holds 5.3 l of petrol and the Honda GX 270 engine burns 2.2 l/h at 75 % load. That gives about 2.4 hours of continuous operation (5.3 l divided by 2.2 l/h). At a lower load consumption drops and running time grows. The engine oil sump holds 0.6 l, and the standard hour meter helps you keep track of service intervals.

Does the Fogo FH 5541 have AVR and is it suitable for electronics?

The Fogo FH 5541 has no electronic AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator), only voltage regulation of +5 / -10 %, and its THD distortion is up to 4 %. That is enough for power tools, lighting and pumps. For sensitive electronics such as computers, controllers or inverters a generator with AVR is better, for example from the category 230 V generators with AVR stabilization.

How does the Fogo FH 5541 differ from the FH 5001?

Both generators have a Honda GX 270 engine, a 5.3 l tank and a 650 × 520 × 490 mm frame. The FH 5001 gives 4.2 kW maximum and 3.8 kW rated output, weighs 53 kg and its alternator has an IP 23 rating. The FH 5541 gives 3.9 kW and 3.5 kW, weighs 65 kg and its alternator has an IP 54 rating, so it copes better with dust and splashing water. Choose the FH 5001 when power and low weight matter, and the FH 5541 when the generator works in dust and moisture.

Does the Fogo FH 5541 replace the FH 4541?

The Fogo FH 5541 is the successor of the FH 4541, which is no longer in the manufacturer range. Both have a maximum output of 3.9 kW, a rated output of 3.5 kW and a Honda GX 270 engine. The FH 5541 weighs 65 kg and the FH 4541 weighed 64 kg. For the FH 5541 the manufacturer lists the A-R650 transport kit, an exhaust hose and a service pack as optional equipment.

Can the Fogo FH 5541 be started in a closed room?

The Fogo FH 5541 is a combustion generator, its exhaust contains carbon monoxide and it must not be started in a closed room. Work outdoors or in a ventilated hall. If the generator has to stand under a roof, lead the exhaust out of the building. The Fogo exhaust hose 2.5 m long and 50 mm in diameter serves this purpose, and the manufacturer lists it for the FH 5541 together with an engine connector.

How do I move the Fogo FH 5541?

The Fogo FH 5541 weighs 65 kg, so one person can hardly carry it. The Fogo A-R650 transport kit helps: two wheels with rubber tyres and two handles with rubber grips, so you roll the generator like a wheelbarrow. The manufacturer lists it as optional equipment of the FH 5541 under art. no. 24429. The generator frame measures 650 × 520 × 490 mm.

What does the service pack for the Fogo FH 5541 contain?

The Fogo service pack for Honda GX 240 and GX 270 engines contains an air filter, a spark plug and engine oil, the parts needed for a basic service. The manufacturer assigns it to the FH 5541 under art. no. 31875. The Honda GX 270 engine has a 0.6 l oil sump, so the oil in the pack is enough for an oil change.
