Condensation Dehumidifiers

A condensation (compressor-based) dehumidifier is a device that removes moisture from the air by condensing water vapour on a cold refrigeration coil. Inside there is a refrigeration circuit with a compressor (like an air conditioner), an evaporator at 2-5°C and a condenser. Moist air passes through the evaporator, water condenses on the fins and flows into the tank or drain. Dried, warmed air returns to the room. A typical condensation dehumidifier rated at 50 L/24h pumps 250-400 m³ of air per hour and consumes 0.4-0.7 kWh of energy per litre of water. Operating temperature range: +5°C to +35°C.

For a home, office or basement up to 60 m², a dehumidifier rated 16-25 L/24h with a power draw of 270-365 W is sufficient — e.g. Trotec TTK Qube (16 L), Dantherm Aerial AD 20 (18 L), Master DHP 20 (19 L). Condensation dehumidifiers operate efficiently in the +5°C to +35°C range, with optimal performance at 20°C and 60% relative humidity (DIN 8978 nominal conditions). Below +15°C the evaporator starts to frost, so construction models include active defrost (hot gas defrost) — every 20-40 min the compressor directs hot refrigerant to the evaporator, melts the frost, resumes work. Below +5°C a condensation dehumidifier stops being efficient — frost forms faster than the unit can dry. For lower temperatures (cold stores, unheated halls in winter, archives) choose a desiccant dehumidifier, which works down to -20°C. Above +35°C the compressor enters thermal protection mode with reduced capacity.

The energy consumption of a condensation dehumidifier depends on capacity and is typically 0.4-0.7 kWh per 1 litre of water removed. Specifically: a 20 L/24h model draws 280-320 W (approx. 7 kWh/day at continuous operation), a 50 L/24h model draws 720-850 W (approx. 18 kWh/day), an industrial 100 L/24h model draws 1,500-1,600 W (approx. 36 kWh/day). The compressor does not run 24h non-stop — after reaching the target humidity it shuts off and restarts cyclically (typically 30-50% duty cycle in stable conditions). Real monthly consumption of a 20 L home dehumidifier: 60-120 kWh. A condensation dehumidifier is 3-5× more energy-efficient than a desiccant unit of comparable capacity.

Basic sizing rule for condensation dehumidifiers: 0.3-0.5 L/24h per m² of floor area for humidity maintenance, and 0.8-1.5 L/24h per m² for intensive drying after screed pouring, flooding or in a very humid room. Drying a fresh concrete screed with a condensation dehumidifier typically takes 14-28 days for a 5-7 cm thick screed over 50-100 m², at 18-22°C and 95% RH initial humidity. Concrete contains roughly 180-220 litres of water per m³ (of which ~30% is free water available for evaporation), so a 5 cm/100 m² screed holds about 900-1,100 litres of water. A 50 L/24h dehumidifier removes this water in 18-22 days, a 100 L/24h unit — in 9-11 days. Practical milestones: after 7 days humidity drops from 95% to 70% RH, after 14 days to 55% RH, after 21 days to the floor-ready level of 45-50% RH (CM around 1.8-2.2%). To maintain efficiency keep windows closed and heating at 20-22°C — lower temperatures extend drying time by 30-50%.

A condensation dehumidifier warms the outlet air by 2-5°C relative to inlet temperature — a side effect of the refrigeration cycle (air passes through the condenser at the end of the cycle, absorbing the compressor's heat). For a 50 L/24h dehumidifier drawing 800 W this means an additional emission of about 2.4 kW of heat into the room (electric energy of the compressor + latent heat of water condensation). This can be an advantage in winter in an unheated space, but a disadvantage in summer — on a hot day a continuously running dehumidifier in a 20 m² room raises temperature by 3-5°C. Models with heat exhaust via hose (TTK 500 ES, Master DH 7160) eliminate this effect — hot air is expelled outdoors. Desiccant dehumidifiers heat more (5-10°C rise) due to the rotor regeneration process.

Condensation dehumidifiers are designed for continuous operation — piston and rotary compressors have a declared service life of 15,000-25,000 operating hours, which at 24/7 operation gives 2-3 years of non-stop running without breaks. In practice the compressor does not run all the time — the built-in hygrostat shuts it off after reaching the target humidity (typically 50-60% RH) and restarts it when humidity rises by 5-10 pp. Average compressor duty cycle in stable conditions: 30-50% of the time. Continuous-drying construction models ("non-stop" / "continuous drain" mode) require a hose connection for water drainage — without it, the unit will shut off when the tank fills. For 24/7 operation, models with a condensate pump are recommended (e.g. Master DH 7160, DH 752, Dantherm AD 750-P) — the pump pushes condensate to a drain higher than the unit. Check the air filter every 200-400 operating hours (once a month at continuous operation).
