Vibratory Screeds

A vibratory screed performs three operations simultaneously: screeds excess concrete off the surface, smooths the top layer and de-airs the concrete 3-5 cm deep through 80-150 Hz vibrations. This eliminates honeycombs, voids and air pockets that, with manual finishing, cause surface crumbling and water absorption. Practical result: SR2-class floor (deviations up to 3 mm/2 m per EN 13670), smooth, without needing a second finishing layer. Without a vibratory screed you'd have to hand-screed and trowel-power separately — that's 3-5x longer work.

A vibratory screed doesn't create level from scratch — it works on previously set guide rails (level rails or laser lines). After concrete is poured from the truck onto a pre-levelled subbase, the screed screeds the excess down to the guide level with ±3 mm accuracy. Final flatness depends on guide setup quality. For the highest accuracy (SR1 class, ±2 mm/2 m) use a laser concrete spreader like ManiPav, which establishes level itself via a laser receiver. The bullfloat vibratory screed is responsible for final smoothing and de-airing of the pre-levelled surface.

The optimal time is 30-60 seconds per square metre for a typical industrial C20/25 floor 12-15 cm thick. Specific guidelines: slow forward feed of 0.5-1 m/min, one pass is enough when cement laitance appears uniformly on the surface (the de-airing signal). Make a second pass only if you see uneven spots or honeycombs. Over-vibration risk: above 90 seconds/m², coarse aggregate sinks to the bottom of the layer while cement laitance and fine fractions float to the top — this causes dust and low surface strength after curing. In practice: vibrate until air bubbles disappear and the surface starts to glisten with laitance, no longer.

Bullfloat screed has 1 aluminium profile (1.5-3.6 m) and comes in two variants: single-handle (Beton Trowel Bullfloat, Enar QZ with oscillating QZH drive, Toolsa Thunder Screed, Belle MIDI SCREED — up to 200-300 m²) and twin-handle (Enar QX with QXH, Beton Trowel EUROSCREED, Toolsa High Screed up to 3.6 m profile — up to 1 000 m²). Twin-beam screed has two parallel rails up to 5 m long — requires 2-3 person operation, used on large industrial surfaces. Truss screed is the most powerful type — truss frame construction with adjustable profile (extends to required length), used for bridge, viaduct, airport concrete vibration and floors with the highest quality requirements. For a home garage, single-handle bullfloat 2 m is enough; for a 2 000 m² warehouse, twin-beam; for a road bridge — truss screed.

Petrol Honda GX25 (1 HP, 4-stroke, ~22 kg with 2 m profile) is the professional standard — full mobility, continuous work, 2 000+ hour reliability. Requires hall ventilation (CO/NO_x exhaust). Electric 230V (~16 kg) best for halls with sockets — quiet (~80 dB), no exhaust, lower cost, but limited by cable (max 50 m). Battery 18V (e.g. Milwaukee MX FUEL, ~14 kg + battery) for frequent location changes and short jobs — cordless convenience, but 20-40 min run-time per battery and higher purchase cost. Practical choice: multi-trade contractor = petrol, industrial floor specialist working in halls = electric, mobile contractor on small jobs = battery.

1.5-2 m screed is the standard for garage floors, driveways and smaller industrial spaces up to ~200 m² — light (~22 kg), easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces, single-handle model (Bullfloat, Enar QZ). 2.5 m screed for floors 200-500 m² — faster width coverage, fewer passes. 3-3.6 m profiles only in twin-handle versions (Enar QXH+QX, Beton Trowel EUROSCREED, Toolsa High Screed) — longer single aluminium profiles need structural reinforcement to maintain flatness. Profiles longer than 3.6 m only exist in twin-beam and truss screeds. Practical rule: for single-operator work the upper limit is 2.5 m profile; 3-3.6 m requires twin handles and often 2-person operation. Enar QXH has interchangeable QX 2 m / 2.5 m / TORNADO / HURACAN-L profiles — one drive handles all scenarios.

Standard procedure: 1) Set level rails every 2-3 m (or use laser receivers). 2) Pour concrete from the truck, pre-spread with shovels/rakes. 3) Start the engine (Honda GX25 has pull-start or electric start), set RPM to maximum (3 600 RPM). 4) Place the screed profile on the rails with light contact — do not press down, the machine's weight is enough. 5) Pull the screed (single-handle) or push evenly with both grips (twin-handle) at 0.5-1 m/min, in continuous motion. 6) Watch — when cement laitance appears uniformly on the surface, one pass is enough. 7) After the pass, move the rails to the next strip. PPE: hearing protection (95 dB), boots with stiff soles (vibration), anti-vibration gloves for >2h work.

They are not the same. A chamfer strip (PVC or aluminium) is a passive moulding fitted in formwork that creates a 45° bevelled edge on a concrete pour — it prevents edge chipping after the concrete cures. Used when pouring stairs, floor edges, columns. A vibratory screed is a powered machine for screeding and smoothing fresh concrete mix. Users often confuse the terms because they search for "concrete strip" and Google returns both product types. A hand aluminium screed (3-4 m, EUR 15-40) is sufficient for areas up to 30-40 m² (typical 1-car garage) if you accept a less even surface and manual de-airing by tamping. For a 2-car garage (50-60 m²), driveway (60-100 m²) or industrial floor it's worth using a single-handle petrol bullfloat screed (Bullfloat 2 m, Toolsa Thunder Screed) — finish quality is noticeably better (SR2 vs SR3-SR4 hand class), work takes 3-5x less time, surface doesn't crumble after a year of use. For 1-2 one-off projects it makes sense to rent the screed (EUR 30-60/day) instead of buying. For contractors doing floors regularly — purchase pays back in 2-3 seasons.
