Level Sets

A level set combines the instrument with the hardware needed to use it: a tripod with a 5/8" or 1/4" thread, a levelling staff extending to roughly 2.4–5 m, and, in laser outfits, a receiver that clamps onto the staff. The parts are matched by specification: the tripod thread fits the instrument base and the staff graduation suits the reading method.

A crossline laser projects horizontal and vertical lines onto walls over roughly 20–30 m, or 50–100 m with a receiver — a finishing tool for interiors. A rotating laser level spins the beam through 360° and builds a plane of roughly 300–600 m in diameter with a receiver, for excavations, footings and screeds. Accuracy is comparable, at around ±1–3 mm over 10 m.

Outdoors a receiver is essential, because a laser beam in full sun disappears from view within a few metres. Without a detector the working range falls to some 20–30 m; with one it grows to several hundred metres of plane diameter. The receiver marks where the plane crosses the staff by tone and display, typically resolving to around 1–2 mm, and lets one person survey alone.

Shell construction — excavation, strip footings, formwork and screeds — calls for a rotating laser level set with a receiver, giving a working diameter of roughly 300–600 m and accuracy of about ±1–3 mm over 10 m. Finishing trades — tiling, dry-lining, ceilings — are covered by a crossline laser set working over 20–30 m, so crews handling both phases start with the rotating outfit.

Optical instruments still lead where repeatability over a long levelling run matters: standard error on a double run is typically 1–2 mm per 1 km, tighter than a site laser holds. They need no power supply and no receiver, work in any light, and hold sight lines of roughly 60–100 m. The trade-off is a second person at the staff, accepted on settlement monitoring and survey handovers.

The simplest field check uses two positions: set the instrument midway between two points about 30 m apart, read the height at both and note the difference; then move it close to one point and repeat the readings. If the two differences disagree by more than the rated accuracy over that distance — usually around 3 mm at 30 m — the instrument needs adjusting. Repeat this after every transport.
