A diaphragm paint sprayer is an airless machine in which hydraulic oil drives a flexible diaphragm that moves the paint, instead of a piston running directly inside the coating. No piston or seal packing touches the material, so the unit shrugs off abrasive fillers, runs quieter and delivers noticeably less pressure pulsation. Working pressure on diaphragm pumps typically reaches around 200 bar and output usually falls between 2 and 4 l/min, which translates into roughly 100–250 m² sprayed per hour.
The design is built around water-based coatings: emulsions, latex paints, acrylics, wood stains and thinner primers — the everyday menu of interior finishing work. NORWIT.PL supplies mainly machines from Titan Wagner and Wagner. For thick, high-viscosity materials and continuous façade work a piston sprayer is the better call; the full overview of pump types sits in the paint sprayers category.
Diaphragm paint sprayers — how the pump works
Inside a diaphragm pump the motor drives a piston running in hydraulic oil, and the oil passes that stroke to a flexible diaphragm which draws in and pushes out the paint. The coating meets only the diaphragm and the ball valves — never a piston seal, so mineral fillers that grind down a piston packing set land on an elastomer instead.
In daily use this shows up as smoothness of operation: the diaphragm evens out pressure peaks, so the fan leaving the gun stays consistent. Machines in this class work up to about 200 bar at 2–4 l/min and draw 0.8–1.6 kW from a 230 V socket, covering roughly 100–250 m² per hour with one gun on a 15–30 m hose. At NORWIT.PL the class is built mainly on Titan Wagner machines, complemented by Wagner models.
Materials, tips and the limit
In a tip code such as 415, the first digit ×2 gives the fan width in inches measured 30 cm from the surface, and the two remaining digits give the orifice diameter in thousandths of an inch. The thicker the material, the larger the orifice.
| Material | Tip orifice | Pressure | Diaphragm pump |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood stains, preservatives, thin paints | 0.009–0.013 in | approx. 100–140 bar | yes |
| Acrylics and water-based enamels | 0.013–0.015 in | approx. 120–160 bar | yes |
| Interior emulsions and latex paints | 0.015–0.019 in | approx. 150–200 bar | yes |
| Heavy primers, façade coatings | 0.021–0.027 in | approx. 180–230 bar | no — use a piston unit |
| Machine-applied filling compounds | above 0.027 in | above 200 bar | no — use a spackling unit |
Gun filter mesh follows the tip: too fine a mesh behind a 0.019 in orifice throttles flow and leaves tails at the edges of the fan. Tips, filters and hoses sit in paint sprayer accessories; paste-consistency compounds are the job of spackling machines.
Diaphragm paint sprayers — common questions
Which paints suit a diaphragm sprayer?
Diaphragm pumps perform best with water-based materials of medium viscosity: emulsions, latex paints, acrylics, water-based enamels and wood stains. Those products spray cleanly at roughly 120–200 bar through a 0.013–0.019 in tip. The boundary runs at high-viscosity materials — heavy primers, façade paints with a large filler content and filling compounds. A diaphragm has a limited stroke, so output drops there and the stream breaks up; that is where a piston pump rated up to 230 bar takes over.
How long does a diaphragm last and what signals a replacement?
The diaphragm is a wear part: with disciplined flushing it lasts on the order of 300–600 running hours, which for most finishing crews means 2–4 seasons. Three symptoms announce the end of its life: the sprayer no longer holds the pressure set on the dial although filters are clean, the hydraulic oil level drops between services, and the oil turns cloudy or takes on the colour of the paint. Replacement covers the diaphragm with balls and valve seats — a simpler job than rebuilding a piston packing set.
How do you clean a diaphragm sprayer after latex paint?
Cleaning starts with releasing the pressure and switching the valve to circulation so paint left in the system returns to the bucket. The suction hose then goes into 5–10 l of clean water and the circuit runs until the stream is clear — on a 15 m hose that usually takes 5–8 minutes. Tip and gun filter are washed separately with a soft brush, never with wire. The last step draws about 0.5 l of storage fluid through the circuit, which keeps the diaphragm from drying out.
What output should you choose for the area to be sprayed?
The reference figure is pump flow in l/min together with the tip size it can feed. A pump around 2 l/min handles tips up to 0.017 in and covers finishing contracts of a few hundred square metres. A machine in the 3–4 l/min bracket feeds a tip up to 0.019 in and holds 200–250 m² per hour on large uninterrupted surfaces. Buy flow headroom: a pump running permanently at its ceiling wears the diaphragm and valves faster.
Diaphragm paint sprayers at NORWIT.PL
We supply professional equipment, mainly Titan Wagner and Wagner, with wear parts on the shelf: diaphragms, valve kits, tips and filters. Heavy primers belong to the piston paint sprayers, and the overview of pump types sits in the paint sprayers category. Orders are placed online.
