A cross line laser set is a complete kit ready to work straight out of the box: a self-leveling line laser, a tripod and — in the more advanced variants — a digital detector and a levelling staff, all packed into one transport case. The laser projects intersecting lines onto walls, ceiling and floor (one horizontal, one vertical), and in 360° versions a full plane around the operator, marking levels, plumb lines and right angles without a string line or a traditional spirit level. A compensator (the self-leveling mechanism) sets the beams automatically within a range of ±3–4°, with an accuracy of ±1–2 mm/10 m depending on the model, and the working range grows from about 30 m to the naked eye up to 70 m once a detector is added.
At NORWIT.PL we stock cross line laser sets primarily from Nivel System — from the 3×360° and 4×360° models with a magnetic compensator, to the electronic CL4D with twice the accuracy — rounded out by Geo Fennel sets in the "easy" (basic kit) and "opti" (tripod, detector, green beam) variants. Nivel System gear is on the brand page Nivel System, single lasers without a full kit are in the cross line lasers category, and the whole range belongs to the level sets department. Below we explain the differences in the number of planes, beam colour and kit composition.
Nivel System and Geo Fennel cross line laser sets — how they work and what's inside
A cross line laser is a measuring tool that projects intersecting beams onto walls, ceiling and floor — one horizontal, one vertical — forming a reference cross. In 360° models the line rotates through a full 360°, so a single beam sweeps the whole room without repositioning the tripod. A compensator (the self-leveling mechanism) sets the line, working within ±3–4°, at an accuracy of ±1–2 mm/10 m depending on the device class.
A cross line laser set is a kit ready to work: the laser, a tripod and a case with power supply. The more advanced variants add a digital detector (a laser receiver — a sensor that catches a beam invisible to the naked eye in bright light), and sometimes a levelling staff. At NORWIT.PL we stock sets primarily from Nivel System, rounded out by Geo Fennel — see the brand page Nivel System. Below, the differences in plane count, beam colour and kit composition.
Types of sets — number of planes and kit composition
What makes a set useful comes down to plane count and kit composition. Single lasers without a full set are in the cross line lasers category, and every set belongs to the level sets department.
| Segment | Characteristics | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 3×360° set (Nivel System CL3) | 1 horizontal + 2 vertical, magnetic compensator ±2 mm/10 m | interior finishing, tiling, drywall |
| 4×360° set (Nivel System CL4) | 2 horizontal + 2 vertical, floor and ceiling at once | larger rooms, ceilings, installations |
| 4×360° electronic set (Nivel System CL4D) | electronic compensator ±1 mm/10 m, out-of-level lock | daily crew work, precision |
| Two-line "easy" set (geo-FENNEL EL 601 / EL 609) | 1 horizontal + 1 vertical, bracket, batteries, case | budget finishing, DIY jobs |
| Multi-line "opti" 360° GREEN set (geo-FENNEL Geo1X-360) | multi-plane, green beam, tripod and detector | bright interiors, precise finishing |
For distances measured in hundreds of metres, a rotary laser level is the better fit.
Popular cross line laser sets
The range spans two-line sets through multi-plane 360° units with a detector — exact specs are on the product pages ("easy" and "opti" from Geo Fennel denote the level of kit completeness).

Beam colour — red, green, blue or violet
Beam colour determines line visibility, not levelling accuracy. A green beam at around 515 nm can be up to 4× brighter to the eye than red (around 635 nm). GREEN lines stay readable in bright interiors at the cost of higher power draw and price; red is enough in shade and runs longer per charge.
| Feature | Red beam (approx. 635 nm) | Green beam (approx. 515 nm) |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility in a bright room | weaker, mainly in shade | high, even near windows |
| Range to the naked eye | approx. 20–30 m | approx. 30 m and more |
| Power draw | lower | higher |
| Set price | lower | higher |
| Best for | shaded work, tight budgets | bright interiors, longer distances |
The CL3/CL4/CL4D family also has blue-beam variants and a violet 450 nm beam in the CL4D-P, with the highest contrast on tiles — its horizontal line additionally runs 17 mm from the base and in the upper dome, easing marking right up against the ceiling.
Working range, detector and tripod in the set
The laser alone is readable to the naked eye at about 30 m. With a detector, such as the Nivel System CLS-300 supplied with the CL3, CL4 and CL4D sets, the working range grows to 70 m. The tripod in the set (type SJJ-M1-EX) sets the device at a height of 62–182 cm, with 1/4" and 5/8" threads.
Set 6 adds a 2.4 m levelling staff for reading height differences. Housings carry an IP54 rating, work from -10°C to +50°C, and run on Li-ion batteries (3.7–7.4 V). Standalone tripods, staffs and detectors are in tripods and staffs and receivers and detectors.
Frequently asked questions about cross line laser sets
What is a cross line laser set and what does the kit normally include?
A cross line laser set is a kit ready to work: a self-leveling laser, a tripod (62–182 cm of adjustment), a case and a power source (batteries or a Li-ion battery pack). Geo Fennel's "opti" variants add a digital detector and a levelling staff. The base kit marks levels up to 30 m, and with a detector the range grows to 70 m. Exact contents are listed on the product page.
How does a self-leveling cross line laser work and what angle range does it cover?
A self-leveling cross line laser has a compensator — magnetic or electronic — setting the horizontal and vertical beams once switched on. Magnetic models, such as the Nivel System CL3 and CL4, work within a ±3° range at ±2 mm/10 m accuracy, while the electronic CL4D extends the range to ±4° at twice the accuracy, ±1 mm/10 m. Beyond that range the laser signals an out-of-level condition by flashing the line.
What's the difference between a two-line laser and a multi-line 360° model?
A two-line laser, such as the geo-FENNEL EL 601 or EL 609, projects 1 horizontal and 1 vertical line straight ahead, forming a cross — enough for hanging fixtures and tiling one wall. A multi-line 360° laser, such as the Nivel System CL3 (1 horizontal + 2 vertical) or CL4 (2 horizontal + 2 vertical), rotates the lines through a full 360° around the operator — a single beam sweeps the whole room without repositioning the tripod, useful for drywall installation.
What is the working range of a cross line laser set with a tripod?
The range of a set depends on whether you work with the device alone or with a detector. To the naked eye the lines are readable up to 30 m. The tripod (62–182 cm of adjustment) makes it easier to set the working height, but on its own it doesn't extend the range — that's the detector's job, stretching the real working range to 70 m, including outdoors. The exact range declared by the manufacturer is on the set's product page.
Do you need an extra receiver (detector) for a cross line laser?
A detector becomes necessary when you have to work in bright light, outdoors, or at a distance beyond 10–15 m, where the laser line stops being clearly visible. A digital detector, such as the Nivel System CLS-300 supplied with the CL3, CL4 and CL4D sets, catches the beam electronically and extends the range to 70 m. For work in one room up to 30 m, the laser alone is enough.
What's the difference between the "easy" and "opti" lines in geo-FENNEL sets?
The "easy" and "opti" labels describe the level of kit completeness, not the laser's measurement class. The "easy" variant (EL 601 in the L36-easy set, EL 609 in the L35-easy set) is the basic package: a two-line laser, a bracket and batteries in a case. The "opti" variant (Geo1X Green in the L66-opti set, Geo1X-360 GREEN in the L63/L64/L65-opti sets) adds a tripod and a detector, and often a green beam and 360° function. The price gap comes from the accessories included, not the model's accuracy.
How much does a complete cross line laser set with a tripod and case cost?
Set price depends above all on plane count, beam colour and kit completeness. Two-line "easy" sets cost the least, multi-line 360° sets with a green beam and detector cost the most, and electronic models with ±1 mm/10 m accuracy sit at the upper end. A set with a detector extending the range to 70 m suits daily crew use. Current prices are on the product pages.
Is a green cross line laser beam more visible than a red one?
A green beam at around 515 nm wavelength can be up to 4 times brighter to the eye than a red one at around 635 nm, because human vision is most sensitive to that part of the spectrum. Green lines stay readable in bright interiors and over greater distances, while red does the job in shade or weaker lighting. Green-beam models, such as the Nivel System CL3G, CL4G, CL4D-G or geo-FENNEL Geo1X Green, usually cost more than red ones.
How do you choose a cross line laser set for finishing and construction work?
The choice depends on job scale and conditions. For interior finishing up to 30 m, a two-line or 360° set with a magnetic compensator at ±2 mm/10 m accuracy is enough, such as the Nivel System CL3 or a geo-FENNEL "easy" set. For site work, in variable lighting and over greater distances, a set with an electronic compensator (±1 mm/10 m), a green beam and a detector reaching 70 m works better, e.g. the Nivel System CL4D.
Is a cross line laser set suitable for tough jobsite conditions?
A cross line laser set rated IP54 and working from -10°C to +50°C is built for jobsite conditions — protected against dust and splashing water, with the case guarding the equipment in transport. In difficult lighting and over greater distances a detector is essential, extending the range to 70 m. A Li-ion battery (3.7–7.4 V) supplies power for a full working day off the mains.
