A three-phase generator with AVR is a 400 V power unit fitted with an Automatic Voltage Regulator — a control circuit that continuously trims the alternator excitation and holds the output voltage inside a narrow band of roughly ±3–5%, even when the load changes in steps. An unregulated set, by comparison, can drift by ±10–15%, and for control electronics, battery chargers and frequency inverters that swing often means a failed board rather than a flicker.
This category gathers three-phase construction generators with AVR stabilisation from Fogo, Altrad Belle and Wacker Neuson, sized for site power, workshops, industrial buildings and electrically driven machines, usually fed through 16 A and 32 A sockets. It is one segment of the wider three-phase 400 V generator range. Stable voltage is what keeps power trowels, floor saws, pumps, core drills and welding gear running safely, and it leaves headroom for the inrush current of induction motors, which reaches 3–7 times the rated value. If you do not need regulation, look at three-phase generators without stabilisation; for single-phase work see 230 V generators with AVR. Below we explain when AVR is essential and how to size the output.
What AVR means in a three-phase generator
AVR stands for Automatic Voltage Regulator — an electronic circuit governing alternator excitation. It samples the output many times per second and trims the excitation current so each phase stays close to the nominal 400 V. Deviation falls to roughly ±3–5%, against ±10–15% with capacitor excitation.
The difference shows the moment the load changes. An induction motor in a power trowel, pump or floor saw draws 3–7 times its rated current while starting; an unregulated set answers with a voltage dip, then an overshoot when the tool stops. A work light will not notice, but for a controller or a switch-mode supply those spikes are the most common cause of failure.
AVR, capacitor excitation or inverter — a comparison
| Feature | Generator with AVR | Generator without AVR | Inverter generator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voltage stability | usually ±3–5% | usually ±10–15% | around ±1%, THD below 3% |
| Output range | approx. 5–15 kVA and above | approx. 2–10 kVA | usually up to approx. 7 kW |
| 400 V supply | available | available | no, 230 V in practice |
| Electronics and controllers | safe to power | not recommended | safe to power |
With 400 V tools the choice narrows to two: a set with AVR or a three-phase generator without stabilisation. An inverter generator stays in its own niche — single-phase 230 V tools up to roughly 5 kW.
Sizing a three-phase generator with AVR
Output is quoted twice: in kVA (apparent power) and kW (real power). Three-phase sets are rated at a power factor of 0.8, so a 10 kVA unit delivers roughly 8 kW of usable power. Add starting headroom to the summed load — 20–30% where tools carry electronics, up to 100% where several motors start at once. Phase imbalance above roughly 20% degrades voltage quality whatever the regulator does.
- up to approx. 5 kVA (approx. 4 kW) — lighting, power tools, one 400 V machine;
- approx. 5–8 kVA (approx. 4–6.5 kW) — power trowel, pump, core drill;
- approx. 8–12 kVA (approx. 6.5–10 kW) — a site running several machines;
- above 12 kVA (10 kW and more) — industrial buildings, standby supply, continuous duty.
For a settled power class see 5 kW three-phase generators or 10 kW three-phase generators. Where mains failure is the concern, see emergency power generators; welding crews, generators with a welding module.
Three-phase AVR generator brands at NORWIT.PL
All of it is built for construction duty: Fogo is made in Poland with a broad 400 V line-up, Altrad Belle supplies sets hardened for rough site work, Wacker Neuson sits in the premium segment, built for continuous running. Brand pages: Fogo, Altrad Belle and Wacker Neuson. Output, engine and sockets are on each product page; cables and adapters sit in power generator accessories. Keep the load between roughly 40% and 80% of rated output — below 30% a diesel set is prone to wet stacking, above 90% the alternator and regulator wear out faster.
Three-phase AVR generators: frequently asked questions
What is AVR in a three-phase 400 V generator?
AVR is an Automatic Voltage Regulator, an electronic circuit controlling alternator excitation. It measures output voltage many times per second and corrects it so each of the three phases holds close to the nominal 400 V. Typical deviation is ±3–5%, against ±10–15% in a capacitor-excited machine. It matters when induction motors start and draw 3–7 times their rated current: the spikes stay below the level that kills controllers.
How does a three-phase generator with AVR differ from one without stabilisation?
A set with AVR keeps voltage within ±3–5% whatever the load does; an unregulated machine works within ±10–15% and dips visibly the moment a tool is switched on. For work lights, heaters and simple power tools the cheaper unregulated version is adequate. Controllers, battery chargers and frequency inverters need an AVR — only it holds the supply inside their tolerance window, a few percent around 400 V.
Three-phase AVR set or inverter generator — which one should I choose?
An inverter generator gives the cleanest waveform, with total harmonic distortion below 3%, but usually only up to roughly 7 kW and as single-phase 230 V. A generator with AVR covers approximately 5–15 kVA and more at 400 V — the only workable answer for machines driven by induction motors. Choose an inverter for light tools, an AVR set for power trowels, pumps and core drills.
What generator output do construction machines need?
Add up every load, then add starting headroom: 20–30% where the equipment carries electronics, up to 100% where several motors start together. At a power factor of 0.8, a 10 kVA unit delivers about 8 kW of real power. A single 400 V machine is covered by the 5–8 kVA class, a site with several machines by roughly 8–12 kVA. Spread the load evenly across the three phases.
What are the drawbacks of a three-phase AVR generator?
The regulator raises the price and adds an electronic component that can fail, usually after an overload or short circuit. It stabilises the amplitude but does not clean up the waveform: total harmonic distortion usually runs at a few percent, against below 3% in inverter units. Nor does it compensate for voltage drop in the cable — at 32 A over more than 25 m the conductor cross-section must be sized for it.
Why buy a three-phase AVR generator at NORWIT.PL
We match power supply to the machines we sell ourselves — power trowels, floor saws, pumps and core drills — so the class we recommend actually starts them, with headroom for inrush, service and parts. For the full picture see the generators category; for single-phase regulated units, 230 V generators with AVR. Orders online, shipped throughout Poland.
