Petrol Engines

A replacement is selected from four dimensions of the old unit: power take-off shaft diameter (19.05, 20 or 25.4 mm), shaft length, shaft profile and the flange bolt pattern. Power is decided last — usually 5–7 HP for single-direction plates up to about 100 kg and 8–10 HP for reversible plates above 200 kg. A 10–20% margin extends service life, but a noticeably heavier unit shifts the mass distribution and makes the machine harder to steer.

A straight shaft is a plain journal of constant diameter — typically 19.05, 20 or 25.4 mm — with a keyway for a pulley or centrifugal clutch; it dominates in power trowels, floor saws and generators. A tapered shaft narrows to its end and holds the driven part with one central bolt, handling shock loads better; it appears in some vibratory plates and pumps. The two cannot be swapped without replacing the drive assembly, so the shaft is checked before the power rating.

A 2:1 reduction gear is an oil-bath gearbox that halves the speed of the power take-off shaft — an engine running at 3600 rpm then delivers around 1800 rpm at twice the torque. It suits slow-running machines with high breakaway resistance, such as concrete mixers. An engine with a reduction gear is roughly 10–20 cm longer and 3–5 kg heavier, so check that it still fits the machine frame.

The first oil change comes after about 20 running hours of break-in, then every 100 hours or once a season; units of 160–390 cm³ hold 0.6–1.1 l of SAE 10W-30 oil. In dusty work the air filter is cleaned every 25 running hours and replaced every 100–150, because a clogged element makes the mixture run rich and cuts power. Inspect the spark plug every 100 running hours, keeping the electrode gap at roughly 0.7–0.8 mm.
