A light tower is a self-contained mobile lighting set: a telescopic mast, floodlights and an on-board power source — a combustion generator or a battery pack — mounted on one trailer or frame. Once deployed it raises the luminaires to 4–9 m and covers an area measured in thousands of square metres, so afternoon and night shifts on a construction site, a road repair or an emergency callout work in full visibility.
The NORWIT.PL range covers light towers from Wacker Neuson and Enar, battery-powered Husqvarna LED lamps with tripods and diffusers, plus balloon lights and their fittings. A tower with its own engine works off-grid; if you only need a power source for tools, go to the generators category. Below we explain how to match tower type, mast height and luminous flux to the size of your site.
A light tower is a system, not a lamp
A light tower (mobile lighting tower) combines three things: elevated light, its own power source and a stable footing. The telescopic column raises the head to 4–9 m, a generator or battery drives the floodlights off-grid, and outriggers hold it steady in wind. An LED head rated 4 × 150–4 × 350 W, delivering 60,000–160,000 lm, lights 2,000–4,000 m² from one position — far beyond a floodlight on a 1.8 m tripod, which casts a flat beam and leaves trenches in shadow.
Types: generator-driven, battery-powered, balloon
Two things decide: how long the unit must run unattended, and what surrounds the site. A generator-driven tower carries long shifts off-grid; a battery model runs silently and fume-free, so it can work inside warehouses and car parks; a balloon gives soft, diffused light.
| Feature | Generator-driven | Battery-powered | Balloon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power source | engine with alternator | 36–48 V battery | generator, mains or battery |
| Working height | usually 7–9 m | approx. 2–4 m | approx. 3–5 m |
| Unattended runtime | 50–150 h per tank | a few to a dozen hours | depends on power source |
| Light character | directional, long throw | directional, spot | diffused 360°, shadow-free |
| Typical use | road works, storage yards | indoors, single work stations | roads, events |
The diesel-driven tower in our range is the trailer-mounted Wacker Neuson LTN5Ypa. The compact LED towers from Enar run from the 230 V mains or a generator, and the battery side is covered by 36 V Husqvarna LED lamps on tripods.
Matching a light tower to the site
Start from the illuminance you need. For outdoor work areas, PN-EN 12464-2 sets 20 lx for traffic and storage, 50 lx for ordinary construction work and 100 lx for assembly and inspection.
- Height — trenching and scaffold work call for 8–9 m masts, a single work station for a 2–4 m tripod; raising the head from 4 to 8 m widens the lit circle roughly fourfold.
- Runtime — a diesel tower usually covers 50–150 h on one tank; with batteries, plan spare packs for the rest of the shift.
- Transport — trailer units tow behind a vehicle, cube units load onto a pickup bed; a pneumatic column rises faster than a winched one.
- Auxiliary sockets — some towers carry 230 V outlets for small tools; to power a whole work front, choose a separate 230 V generator.
Light towers — frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a light tower and a balloon light?
The difference lies in light character and working height. A tower carries directional floodlights at 7–9 m and throws a long beam across a sector of 2,000–4,000 m². A balloon is an illuminated dome on a 3–5 m stand: it spreads light through 360°, casts no hard shadows and does not dazzle drivers. Balloons therefore suit road incidents and maintenance work, while towers suit open work fronts.
How large an area does a single light tower cover?
Coverage follows from luminous flux and the illuminance you require. An LED head of around 4 × 240 W puts out roughly 100,000 lm and, from 8–9 m, holds about 20 lx over 2,500–4,000 m². Raise the requirement to 50 lx and the same tower realistically serves 800–1,200 m². On a large site, two towers in opposite corners beat one in the middle.
How long does a generator-driven light tower run between refuellings?
Runtime follows from fuel consumption and tank size. Diesel towers with LED heads typically burn 0.7–1.2 l/h from tanks of 60–120 l, which gives roughly 50 to 150 hours of light — from four to more than a dozen 12-hour shifts between refills. Metal-halide heads drew two to three times more energy, so check that a quoted runtime refers to the LED version.
How do you set up a light tower safely in windy conditions?
Safe deployment starts with the ground and the outriggers: set the tower on firm ground, extend the outriggers fully and level the frame — only then raise the column. Manufacturers give a wind-speed limit for a raised 7–9 m column, usually around 80 km/h; above that, and before transport, the column comes down. Aim the head to light the work area without dazzling operators or drivers.
