A Loncin engine is a four-stroke, spark-ignition petrol unit with an overhead-valve layout, fitted either as the power source of a new construction or garden machine or as a replacement for a worn-out drive. Two families run through this category: the G series with a horizontal shaft (usually about 5.5–9 hp, most often a 25.4 mm shaft) used in power trowels, motor pumps and vibratory plates, and the LC1P series with a vertical shaft (from about 123 cm³ upwards) used in garden tractors and ride-on mowers.
Shaft orientation decides whether an engine can be bolted on at all. A vertical unit will not stand in for a horizontal one, or the other way round, even when both deliver the same power. Read the rating plate of the old drive first: power, displacement, shaft diameter and length, plus the bolt pattern of the mounting foot.
This category sits within our range of petrol engines. The full catalogue of the manufacturer is gathered on the Loncin brand page.
Loncin engines — drives for construction and garden machinery
Loncin, a Chinese manufacturer, builds petrol engines for machine drives: four-stroke, air-cooled, OHV (Over Head Valve — valves in the head instead of the block, which lowers fuel use and running temperature). Across construction and garden machinery the brand runs roughly 5.5–15 hp at displacements of 120–400 cm³. Loncin engines are brought in to order, not held in stock.
G series and LC1P series — horizontal against vertical shaft
The model code states which way the crankshaft points — the first thing to settle. Codes opening with G carry a horizontal shaft, driving through a belt or a centrifugal clutch. Codes opening with LC1P — LC1P92F1 in garden tractors, for instance — carry a vertical shaft that turns a mower blade or a tractor transmission. The letter E marks electric start.
| Feature | G series — horizontal shaft | LC1P series — vertical shaft |
|---|---|---|
| Shaft orientation | horizontal, exits sideways | vertical, points downwards |
| Typical range offered | approx. 5.5–9 hp | approx. 123–400 cm³ |
| Shaft diameter | usually 19.05 or 25.4 mm | to suit the machine blade seat |
| Machines driven | power trowels, motor pumps, vibratory plates | garden tractors, ride-on mowers |
Choosing a Loncin engine as a replacement
A replacement is specified from the rating plate of the drive being removed:
- Shaft orientation — horizontal or vertical; nothing else counts until this matches.
- Power output — close to the outgoing unit, tolerance around 10%.
- Shaft diameter and length — commonly 19.05 or 25.4 mm, cylindrical with a keyway.
- Bolt pattern of the foot — it has to line up with the machine frame.
- Drive accessories — clutch, pulley or reduction gear often sold separately.
Where those agree, the swap takes 1–3 hours in the workshop. Plan the first oil change after roughly 20 operating hours and every 100 hours afterwards, with a check of the filters for combustion engines.
Loncin engines — frequently asked questions
What separates the Loncin LC1P series from the G series?
The dividing line is crankshaft direction. LC1P units send the shaft vertically downwards to turn a mower blade or a garden-tractor transmission, from about 123 cm³ upwards. G units send the shaft out horizontally, usually at 19.05 or 25.4 mm diameter, into power trowels, motor pumps and vibratory plates of roughly 5.5–9 hp. The families are not interchangeable even at identical power — their lubrication assumes different working positions.
Can a horizontal-shaft Loncin engine replace another brand of drive in a power trowel?
Fitting a replacement works when four things agree: shaft orientation, power within roughly 10% of the original, shaft diameter and length, and the bolt spacing of the foot. The G series carries the 25.4 mm shaft geometry common across construction machinery, so it often drops in without adapters. The badge on the original engine carries no weight — dimensional agreement with the rating plate does. Check separately whether a centrifugal clutch is included.
How much power should a Loncin engine have for a given machine?
The factory-fitted unit sets the reference point, because the frame, transmission and clutch were engineered around it. Garden tractors and ride-on mowers typically run vertical-shaft engines of some 120–400 cm³, scaled to the width of the cutting deck. Power trowels and motor pumps usually work with about 5.5–9 hp. An engine below that band overheats in continuous duty, while an oversized one raises the price and overloads the driven parts.
How available are Loncin engines and their service parts?
Loncin engines are ordered in on request rather than kept on the shelf, so price and lead time are confirmed after an online enquiry. Service parts are simpler: air filters, oil filters and spark plugs use the sizes standard for OHV petrol units. Maintenance is densest early on — first oil change after around 20 operating hours, further changes every 100 hours, and an air-filter check roughly every 25 hours of work.
