Cold water pressure washers — what dropping the burner changes

A pressure washer without heating pumps water at mains temperature and cleans with the kinetic energy of the jet. With no burner or heating coil it is lighter and needs no servicing of a combustion circuit — the whole electrical input drives the pump motor, usually 2–7.5 kW in professional units.

This is the tool for mineral and biological soiling: cutting dust, mud, mortar and render residue, moss and algae. Heat adds nothing to such deposits — the force of the jet and the volume of water flushing the loosened layer away decide the result.

Classes of cold water machines — 230 V and three-phase

Machines without heating differ in power supply and pump design, and that sets how long they run without a break. Figures below are ranges per class; exact parameters are on the product pages.

A brass pump head with ceramic pistons, gear drive instead of a direct coupling and reduced motor speed (around 1450 rpm rather than 2800 rpm) mark out machines for long sessions — mostly the 400 V class, since a single-phase installation runs out of headroom at roughly 3.5 kW.

Matching pressure and output to mineral soiling

With cold water, output governs how fast you work and pressure whether the dirt layer breaks at all: a 1000 l/h machine covers the same surface about twice as fast as a 500 l/h one. Cutting dust, slurry and moss give way at 120–180 bar and 600–900 l/h. Dried mortar, cement laitance and render call for 180–250 bar. Machinery and undercarriages are washed at 150–220 bar, keeping the lance off bearings and wiring. Grease, oil and baked-on deposits are beyond the reach of cold water.

A rotary nozzle concentrates the pressure into a spinning point and cuts the time on hardened deposits, though on soft substrates it leaves tracks; large flat areas go faster with a surface cleaner.
