Description

Toolsa Complete Fresno Broom – smoothing and broom finishing of concrete in one pass

A Fresno Broom is a hand-held texturing float: a smoothing blade with a brush mounted on it, guided on a long pole over freshly placed concrete. The Toolsa kit includes a manganese steel blade 127 mm wide in a length of 915 or 1220 mm, a concrete brush with an aluminium bracket of the same working width, three aluminium poles Ø45 mm × 1830 mm and an angle-adjustable bracket. On the push stroke the blade closes and levels the surface, on the pull stroke the brush leaves a slip-resistant texture – two finishing steps in one pass, without stepping onto the slab.

What is in the kit

The core of the kit is a manganese steel blade with round ends measuring 915 × 127 mm or 1220 × 127 mm. Manganese steel is stiffer than aluminium, so the blade does not flex on a long pole and keeps a straight edge through years of work on aggregate. On the blade sits a concrete brush with an aluminium bracket 915 or 1220 mm wide (1.85 kg or 2.1 kg) with replaceable bristles. The tool runs on three aluminium poles Ø45 mm × 1830 mm, giving a reach of about 5.5 m when joined, and on an angle-adjustable bracket (270 × 140 × 140 mm).

How a Fresno Broom works

The worm-gear bracket changes the blade angle during the stroke. When pushing, the leading edge lifts and the steel edge presses the aggregate down and closes the top layer. When pulling, the blade drops and the brush leaves parallel grooves 1–3 mm deep that cure into a slip-resistant texture. One pass replaces two tools: a smoothing float and a separate concrete broom. This is a finishing broom for fresh concrete, not a cleaning brush – the bristles are chosen to score the paste, not to sweep it away.

915 mm or 1220 mm

The 915 mm version suits single-lane driveways, footpaths, exterior steps and rooms with many corners – a shorter blade is easier to steer along kerbs and walls. The 1220 mm version speeds up wide driveways, patios and slabs, because every pass closes a strip a quarter wider. Poles and bracket are identical in both versions, and the blade and brush are sold separately, so one set of poles serves both sizes.

When to broom-finish concrete

The Fresno Broom follows the vibrating screed, once the surface is still plastic but no bleed water stands on it – usually 30–60 minutes after placing, depending on temperature and mix. On floors that must stay smooth this stage is done with a Bull Float and finished with a power trowel. On exterior surfaces where grip matters, the Fresno Broom is the last tool – broomed concrete is not trowelled afterwards.

Order the Toolsa Fresno Broom kit at NORWIT.PL

The kit belongs to the Toolsa range and shares its poles and bracket with the rest of this series of finishing floats. If you already own poles and a bracket, the blade with brush alone is enough. For smooth floors without texture choose the Bull Float kit, and find the other brooms and texturing floats in the Fresno Brooms category.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between the 915 mm and 1220 mm versions and which one to choose?

Both kits share the same poles, bracket and construction; they differ only in the length of the blade and brush: 915 × 127 mm or 1220 × 127 mm. The 915 mm version is about 0.3 kg lighter at the brush and easier to steer along kerbs, walls and corners, so it is chosen for single-lane driveways, footpaths and steps. The 1220 mm version closes a strip 305 mm wider on every pass, which noticeably shortens the work on wide driveways and slabs. If most of your jobs are surfaces wider than 3 m, 1220 mm is the universal choice.

What is included in the Toolsa Complete Fresno Broom kit?

The kit has four parts: a manganese steel blade with round ends measuring 915 × 127 mm or 1220 × 127 mm, a concrete brush with an aluminium bracket 915 or 1220 mm wide, three aluminium poles Ø45 mm × 1830 mm and an angle-adjustable bracket measuring 270 × 140 × 140 mm. The poles screw together, so you fit one or two in a small room and all three on a large slab, which gives a reach of about 5.5 m.

How does a Fresno Broom work and why is concrete broom-finished?

A Fresno Broom combines two finishing steps in one pass. On the push stroke the bracket lifts the leading edge and the steel edge presses the aggregate down and closes the top layer, levelling the marks left by screeding. On the pull stroke the blade drops and the brush scores parallel grooves 1–3 mm deep into the paste. Once cured, the grooves form a slip-resistant texture that drains water and improves grip for tyres and footwear. Concrete is broom-finished on driveways, footpaths, ramps and patios, wherever a smooth floor would be slippery in rain or frost.

Does a Fresno Broom replace a Bull Float and a power trowel?

No, these are three tools for different finishes. The order of work on a slab is fixed: first the vibrating screed compacts and strikes off the concrete, then a hand float follows, and a power trowel comes last. On floors that must be smooth the hand float is a Bull Float and the trowel finishes the surface smooth. On exterior surfaces the hand float is the Fresno Broom, which leaves the texture straight away, and the work ends there, because broomed concrete is not trowelled. Both kits share the same Ø45 mm poles and bracket, so one set of poles serves both tools.

Can the brush or the blade be bought separately?

Yes, every part of the kit is available as a separate product in the same Toolsa series. The brush with the aluminium bracket has replaceable bristles, so after wear you replace only the insert or the whole brush in 915 or 1220 mm without buying a new blade. The manganese steel blade comes in three lengths: 915, 1067 and 1220 mm, and the poles and bracket are shared by all Toolsa hand floats and texturing brooms. A crew that already owns poles from a Bull Float kit therefore adds only the blade with brush.

Do the poles and bracket from this kit fit other Toolsa blades?

Yes, the Ø45 mm × 1830 mm poles and the worm-gear bracket are common to the whole Toolsa range of hand-float accessories. They fit aluminium and magnesium Bull Float blades in 915, 1220 and 1829 mm, the wide 305 mm Big Blue Float blades and the concrete brush with a U-type adapter. The bracket lets you change the tool angle smoothly without putting the pole down, which matters with a Fresno Broom: one angle is for smoothing, another for brooming.

How does the complete kit differ from the blade with brush alone?

The smoothing blade with brush alone is only the working part: a blade with a brush fitted, without poles or bracket. The complete kit adds three 1830 mm aluminium poles and the angle-adjustable bracket, that is everything needed to start work straight out of the box. The blade with brush alone is chosen by crews that already have poles and a bracket from another Toolsa kit, while the complete kit is for those buying their first tool of this series.

How deep is the texture from a Fresno Broom and is such concrete slip-resistant?

The depth of the texture depends on the brush angle, the pressure and the timing. With light pressure and a flat angle the brush leaves grooves of about 1 mm, suitable for patios and footpaths used barefoot or in light shoes. More pressure and a steeper angle give grooves up to 3 mm, used on driveways and ramps where tyre grip matters. Brooming is done after the bleed water has evaporated, usually 30–60 minutes after placing. Brooming too early washes the grooves out, too late no longer scores the hardened paste.
