Description

Tyrolit Premium CDL TGD ⌀ 450 mm core drill bit – large openings in reinforced concrete

A core drill bit is a diamond tube that cuts out a solid core instead of grinding the material into dust, which is why drilling holes in concrete this way leaves a clean edge and does not disturb the structure around the opening. The Tyrolit Premium CDL TGD runs wet, measures 450 mm in diameter with a 450 mm working length and a 1 1/4" thread. It weighs 25 kg and the body is made in Austria.

450 mm is the hole diameter, not the bit length

In budget listings the figure "450 mm" usually means the length of a bit that is only 50–100 mm across. Here both dimensions are 450 mm: the opening is 450 mm wide and the maximum drilling depth in a single pass is also 450 mm. This is a tool for ventilation ducts, chimneys, service risers and technical penetrations.

TGD® technology and an 11.3 mm segment

TGD® (Tyrolit Grain Distribution) is the manufacturer's method of arranging diamond grains inside the segment. An even distribution keeps the load on the crown constant and improves heat removal, so cutting speed does not drop as the tool wears. The segment is 11.3 mm high, 20 mm long and 5 mm thick, with grit size 38.

CDL specification – reinforced concrete, soft to medium-hard aggregate

The CDL ★★★ marking identifies the bond specification: the manufacturer intends it for reinforced concrete with soft to medium-hard aggregate, from low to highly abrasive. Where the aggregate is hard (granite, quartz, river gravel), the harder CDM TGD specification in the same diameter is the right choice. Metal bond, diamond abrasive.

1 1/4" mounting and machine selection

The 1 1/4" UNC thread is the core drilling standard, so the bit fits machines from different brands without an adapter. At 450 mm you need a rig rated for that range – our line-up includes the Tyrolit DME52UW drill motor (5.2 kW, 110–500 mm). For large diameters, from 300 mm upwards, Tyrolit itself recommends the large-diameter flange (GR-F) instead of a threaded mount.

Questions and answers

What is a core drill bit and how does it differ from an ordinary concrete drill?

A core drill bit is a diamond tube that cuts out a solid core and removes only a ring the thickness of its wall — 5 mm in this case. An ordinary hammer drill pulverises the entire cross-section, so at 450 mm it would have to grind away more than 70,000 mm² instead of roughly 7,000 mm². Core drilling works without hammering, so the concrete around the opening does not crack and the edge comes out smooth, ready for a sleeve or a pipe.

Is 450 mm the hole diameter or the length of the bit?

In this model both dimensions are 450 mm: the opening is 450 mm across and the working length of the crown is also 450 mm, which is the maximum drilling depth in a single pass. This is worth checking when comparing offers — in budget bits the figure 450 mm usually refers to the body length of a tool only 50-100 mm across. Deeper holes are drilled by adding an extension with a 1 1/4" thread.

What drilling rig do I need for a 450 mm core bit?

You need a core drilling machine whose working range covers 450 mm, operated on a stand anchored to the substrate. At NORWIT.PL that range is covered by the Tyrolit DME52UW motor (5.2 kW, 110-500 mm), the Husqvarna DM 700 (6 kW, up to 600 mm) and the Husqvarna DM 430 (up to 450 mm), among others. The CDL series data sheet quotes drill motors up to 3.5 kW as the reference range for this specification. The crown itself weighs 25 kg, so fitting and removing it is a two-person job.

How do I mount a core bit with a 1 1/4" thread?

The crown screws onto the machine spindle with a 1 1/4" UNC thread, the standard adopted by most rig manufacturers, so no adapter is required. Apply copper paste or grease to the thread, because after a few hours of wet drilling an unlubricated joint tends to seize. For large diameters, from 300 mm upwards, Tyrolit recommends the large-diameter flange (GR-F) instead of a threaded mount, as it seats the crown more rigidly.

What does TGD® technology do?

TGD® stands for Tyrolit Grain Distribution and means that diamond grains are positioned inside the segment in a controlled pattern rather than at random. Every grain then carries a similar load, which gives even segment wear, better heat removal and a constant cutting speed throughout the life of the tool. In this model the segment is 11.3 mm high, 20 mm long and uses grit size 38.

Can this bit be used for dry drilling?

No — this crown is intended for wet drilling only. Water does two jobs at once: it cools the metal bond of the segment and flushes slurry out of the gap between the crown and the core. At 450 mm the cutting area is large enough that without a continuous water feed the bond overheats and the segment loses its diamond. Water is supplied from a pressure sprayer or from the rig's mains connection.

What is the difference between the CDL and CDM specifications?

These are two bond specifications within the same Premium class, both using TGD® technology and an 11.3 mm segment. The manufacturer intends CDL for reinforced concrete with soft to medium-hard aggregate and machines up to 3.5 kW, and CDM for medium-hard to hard aggregate and machines above 3.5 kW. In practice the aggregate decides: limestone and low-hardness river gravel call for CDL, granite and quartz for CDM.

What is a 450 mm opening used for?

A diameter of 450 mm is already in the range of service penetrations rather than point openings. Typical applications are ventilation and air-conditioning ducts, flue pipes, sewage and water risers, technical penetrations through walls and slabs, and starter openings for directional drilling. Beyond 450 mm of depth the hole is drilled in stages, adding a 1 1/4" extension.
