What is the best way to polish concrete over a large area?

On floors measured in thousands of square metres the most efficient tool is a polishing power trowel, that is a ride-on machine carrying diamond pads instead of blades. The Barikell MP8-90 Polishing works across 1800 mm and drives 32 pads at once, which lets the PREMIUM procedure finish more than 1000 sq. m per day. A planetary grinder with a 500 to 800 mm working width needs several times longer.

Does a polishing trowel replace a planetary grinder?

A polishing trowel takes over from a planetary grinder on large open floors because it works wider and faster. The planetary grinder stays essential along edges, in narrow rooms and when removing thick coatings, where high unit pressure is required. In practice contractors run both: the trowel covers the field while a grinder and an edge polisher handle the perimeter.

How many diamond pads does one polishing stage need?

The Barikell MP8-90 Polishing has eight 300 mm pad holders and each holder takes four 75 mm discs, so a single stage needs a set of 32 discs. The manufacturer rates one set for up to 2000 sq. m. On the smaller Moskito 4-60 Polishing a set is 12 discs rated for up to 1000 sq. m.

Does the MP8-90 Polishing work wet or dry?

The machine works both ways, which is why it carries a factory water system. The first two stages, grinding at grit 30 and 60, are done wet. The following three polishing stages from grit 140/170 up to 800 run dry, and the machine can then be connected to an industrial vacuum to keep the hall dust-tight.

What is the daily polishing output of this machine?

The manufacturer states more than 1000 sq. m per working day for the PREMIUM procedure. The result depends on the hardness and absorbency of the substrate and on the number of stages. The full procedure has seven steps: two wet grinding passes, densifying with Concrete Hardener H35, three dry polishing passes and final protection with Concrete Guard Lithium PRO.

Yes, polishing does not require fresh concrete. On an old floor the process starts with more aggressive grinding at grit 30, which removes the soiled layer and exposes the aggregate. The slab must be sound, without structural cracking, and free of resin coatings, which have to be stripped first. After grinding the substrate is strengthened with a silicate densifier.

The MK8-90 is a trowel for finishing fresh concrete, working with blades at troweling speed. The MP8-90 Polishing carries eight hook-and-loop diamond pad holders instead of blades, runs at a reduced 116 rpm, and adds a factory water system and two LED work lights. Both machines weigh about 290 kg but their purposes do not overlap.
