Description

Barikell Pala 4-75 finishing blades — finishing blades for the 4-75 trowel

Pala blades are finishing blades: narrow steel blades used for the last passes that give the slab its smoothness and sheen. The Barikell Pala 4-75 finishing blades set (set of 4, 2.97 kg) fits the single-rotor Barikell 4-75 (750 mm). The blades are double-sided — once one edge is worn, turn them through 180 degrees and the set runs twice as long.

Which trowels they fit

The set fits: Barikell 4-75. The 4-75 code gives the number of spider arms and the blade-circle diameter in cm — blades are matched exactly to the model because length, hole spacing and thickness differ. Mounting: M8 bolts (Barikell single-rotor trowels).

Double-sided — twice the running distance

The working edge wears unevenly (more on the leading side), so once it rounds off you unbolt the blade, turn it and work the second edge. Barikell presses its blades from springy, wear-resistant steel; the manufacturer quotes a service life up to four times that of typical substitutes.

When to fit finishing blades

Finishing blades go on after the float-pan stage, once the concrete no longer gives under the machine. Start at about 5 degrees of pitch and increase to 15–25 degrees with each pass — the higher the pitch and rotor speed, the harder and glossier the surface. Going in too early with finishers leaves waves and dark burn marks.

Replacement and care

Replace blades as a full set (set of 4) so the head runs true — one new blade among worn ones leaves a track. Wash cement slurry off after work; hardened concrete on the edge spoils the finish. Wear shows as a rounded edge and a visibly shorter blade compared with a new one.

Questions and answers

What are finishing (Pala) blades?

Finishing blades, "Pala" in Barikell's naming, are narrow steel blades used for the last passes over the concrete to give the floor its smoothness and sheen. They work at a pitch of about 5 to 15–25 degrees; the higher the pitch and rotor speed, the harder and glossier the surface. Pala blades are double-sided — once one edge is worn, turn them through 180 degrees.

How do I choose trowel blades?

A blade code such as 4-90 gives the number of spider arms (4) and the blade-circle diameter in centimetres (90). Blades are matched exactly to the machine model because length, hole spacing and thickness differ: Barikell single-rotor trowels use M8 mounting, ride-ons M10. A set for a four-arm machine is 4 blades, for a twin-rotor eight-arm machine 8.

When should I use Teflon blades instead of steel?

Teflon (plastic) blades are fitted for the last passes on integrally coloured or dry-shake coloured floors, white-cement concrete and screeds meant to stay matt. At high pitch a steel blade polishes the concrete and locally burns it, leaving dark glassy patches; Teflon does not heat the surface or abrade pigment. For a standard industrial floor and a high-gloss finish use steel.

When do I start troweling with finishing blades?

Finishers go on after the float-pan or combi stage, once the concrete no longer gives under the machine and the pan starts to slide without effect. Start at about 5 degrees of pitch and increase it with each pass. Going in too early leaves waves and burn marks; too late gives no sheen because the surface is already too hard.

How long do blades last and when should I replace them?

Running distance depends on aggregate hardness, dry-shake hardener and working pitch; the manufacturer quotes a service life for Barikell blades up to four times that of typical substitutes. Wear shows as a rounded edge and a visibly shorter blade. Turn double-sided blades to the second edge first, and always replace as a full set — one new blade among worn ones leaves a track.

How can I extend blade life?

Wash cement slurry off the set after every job before it sets — hardened concrete on the edge spoils the finish and speeds up wear. Turn the blades when the leading edge starts to round off, not when it is fully worn. Tighten the M8 or M10 bolts evenly with a spanner and check before each shift that no blade is bent.
