Description

Fogo F 8000 TRE three-phase generator – 7.0 kVA 400 V with electric start, AVR and a 45 l tank

Fogo F 8000 TRE is a three-phase petrol generator for 400 / 230 V with 7.7 kVA maximum and 7.0 kVA rated output (cos φ 0.8), powered by a Rato R420 engine, with automatic voltage regulation of AVR +/-2 %, an electric starter with a battery included as standard and a 45 l fuel tank. The rated current of 10.1 A per phase is available from the 400 V 16 A socket, and from the 230 V 16 A socket you can draw 3.5 kW (15.2 A) on a single phase. The 790 x 580 x 650 mm frame weighing 94 kg fits on the load bed of a van. It is built for construction sites, three-phase machines and backup power where the generator has to run for many hours and start without pulling a cord.

Three-phase 400 V and single-phase 230 V – how much power for what

Three-phase output is 7.7 kVA maximum and 7.0 kVA rated. kVA is apparent power; the real power is that figure multiplied by cos φ, so at cos φ 0.8 the rated 7.0 kVA gives about 5.6 kW for three-phase loads such as pumps, concrete mixers, core drills and compressors. The 400 V 16 A socket delivers a three-phase current of 10.1 A. Single-phase loads go to the 230 V 16 A socket, which supplies 3.5 kW rated and 3.9 kW maximum, not the whole 7.0 kVA – this follows from the output being split across three phases.

Electric start with a battery, manual start as a back-up

The engine is started by an electric starter powered by a battery that is part of the standard equipment, so you start the engine without pulling a cord. Manual start remains as a back-up if the battery is flat. The power unit is a single-cylinder, four-stroke petrol engine of 420 cm³, air-cooled, with a 1.1 l oil sump and an oil level sensor that stops the engine before it runs too low on oil. If you do not need the starter and prefer a lower weight (90 kg), choose the manual-start version – the Fogo F 8000 TR.

45 l tank and up to 15.5 hours of running

The 45 l fuel tank and a consumption of 2.9 l/h (75 % load) give up to 15.5 h of running without refuelling – a full working shift with a reserve, or many hours of emergency power without topping up. At lower load the consumption drops and the run time grows.

AVR +/-2 % and a class H alternator

The electronic AVR regulator keeps the voltage within +/-2 %, and the total harmonic distortion stays at or below 6 %, which suits three-phase motors and controllers. The alternator has insulation class H, protection rating IP 23 and allows a starting current of 300 % of the rated value. Induction motors draw 3-5 times more current at start-up than in steady running, so match the load to the rated output, not the maximum.

Frame, transport and exhaust routing

The structure is an open tubular frame that protects the engine and alternator while leaving access to the air filter and spark plug. The dimensions of 790 x 580 x 650 mm and the weight of 94 kg – 4 kg more than the F 8000 TR – call for two people to carry it; around the site it is easier to move on the Fogo ZT300-38 transport set, designed for generators with a 45 l tank. The silencer has a connection for an exhaust hose, and the 2.5 m, 50 mm exhaust hose is sold separately. The sound power level is 99 dB(A).

Service and optional equipment

For this model the manufacturer offers an hour meter that fits on the ignition coil and helps you keep to service intervals, and a service kit with an air filter, spark plug and engine oil for the R 420 engine with electric start. The generator meets Directives 2006/42/EC (Machinery), 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage) and 2014/30/EU (Electromagnetic Compatibility).

Questions and answers

What is the difference between the Fogo F 8000 TRE and the F 8000 TR?

Both models share the same Rato R420 engine of 420 cm³, automatic AVR regulation of +/-2 %, a 45 l tank and the same three-phase output: 7.7 kVA maximum and 7.0 kVA rated at 400 V. The F 8000 TRE adds an electric starter with a battery included as standard, so it weighs 94 kg, while the manual-start F 8000 TR weighs 90 kg. The dimensions are identical: 790 x 580 x 650 mm. Choose the TRE for a generator that is started often or by people who find manual starting difficult, and the TR when you do not need a starter.

How much power does the Fogo F 8000 TRE deliver on single-phase 230 V?

The 230 V 16 A socket of the Fogo F 8000 TRE delivers 3.5 kW rated and 3.9 kW maximum, which corresponds to a current of 15.2 A. That is less than the three-phase 7.0 kVA, because you only get the full output of the generator when the load is spread across three phases. One 230 V socket therefore supplies devices with a total of up to 3.5 kW, for example power tools, site lighting and heaters, while larger three-phase loads are powered from the 400 V 16 A socket.

What does 7.0 kVA mean and how many kW is that?

kVA (kilovolt-ampere) is the unit of apparent power, while kW is the real power that devices actually turn into work or heat. The relationship is described by the power factor cos φ: real power in kW is apparent power in kVA multiplied by cos φ. For the Fogo F 8000 TRE the manufacturer gives cos φ 0.8, so the rated 7.0 kVA gives about 5.6 kW for three-phase loads (7.0 x 0.8), and the maximum 7.7 kVA about 6.2 kW. Match the power of motors and tools to the kW value.

How long does the Fogo F 8000 TRE run on one tank?

The Fogo F 8000 TRE tank holds 45 l of petrol and consumption at 75 % load is 2.9 l/h, which gives up to 15.5 hours of running without refuelling. At lower load the generator burns less and runs longer. That is enough for a full working shift and for many hours of emergency power, and the electric starter with a battery lets you restart the engine after every break without pulling a cord.

Can the Fogo F 8000 TRE generator be started manually?

The Fogo F 8000 TRE has two starting systems: electric and manual. The starter, powered by a battery that is part of the standard equipment, turns over the single-cylinder Rato R420 engine of 420 cm³ without effort, and manual start remains as a back-up if the battery goes flat. Check the oil level in the 1.1 l sump before every start - the oil level sensor stops the engine when the level is too low, but it does not replace the check.

What three-phase loads can the Fogo F 8000 TRE power?

The generator powers three-phase 400 V loads with a total of up to 7.0 kVA (10.1 A per phase), that is about 5.6 kW of real power: pumps, concrete mixers, core drills, compressors and construction tools. Induction motors draw 3-5 times more current at start-up than in steady running, so the largest such motor should have an apparent power of about 1.4-2.3 kVA. The AVR regulator keeps the voltage within +/-2 %, which suits motors and controllers.

Can the Fogo F 8000 TRE be connected to a home installation?

A generator must not be plugged into a wall socket. A home installation is powered through a mains-generator changeover switch or a dedicated inlet fitted by a qualified electrician, which prevents back-feeding the grid and running the grid and the generator at the same time. The Fogo F 8000 TRE delivers 7.0 kVA on three phases (400 V) and 3.5 kW on a single phase (230 V), and the 45 l tank lasts about 15.5 hours of emergency power at 75 % load. The choice of switch depends on the installation, so leave it to an electrician.

What accessories fit the Fogo F 8000 TRE and can it be used in a garage?

The manufacturer offers four items for this model. The Fogo ZT300-38 transport set with wheels and a handle is designed for generators with a 45 l tank. The exhaust hose is 2.5 m long and 50 mm in diameter. The hour meter helps you keep to service intervals, and the service kit contains an air filter, spark plug and engine oil. Exhaust contains odourless, toxic carbon monoxide, so the generator must run outdoors or in a well-ventilated place, never in a closed garage; the hose routes the exhaust away from the work area but does not replace ventilation.
