A combustion engine (internal combustion engine) converts fuel energy into mechanical work through the intake–compression–power–exhaust cycle. In construction machinery this is almost always a small spark-ignition petrol unit of about 3.5 to over 20 HP driving plate compactors, generators, water pumps, concrete vibrators and ride-on cut-off saws. Its power, torque and reliability decide the machine's output, while parts availability decides its lifespan.

OHV (Over Head Valve — valves in the cylinder head) is the standard in professional construction engines: it gives lower fuel consumption and cooler running than older side-valve designs. V-twin means a two-cylinder unit in a V configuration, used in the most powerful drives above 14 HP.

Petrol engine classes and matching power to the machine

Engines for construction machinery fall into classes by displacement and power. The ranges below are industry brackets — the exact power in HP, displacement in cc and shaft type are listed on each product page, because those figures decide replacement compatibility.

When selecting an engine, go by the power of the factory unit (from the rating plate) and by the shaft geometry. The popular Honda GX 160 has around 163 cc and 4.8 HP, while stronger units from the Briggs & Stratton Vanguard family reach double-digit horsepower. A replacement must have similar power (within about 10%), the same shaft type and length, and the same mounting hole spacing — otherwise the machine loses output or the drive will not fit.

Petrol engine versus diesel engine

Petrol dominates in small construction machinery, but it helps to know how it differs from a diesel unit. Petrol relies on spark ignition (a spark plug) and a compression ratio of about 8–12:1 — the unit is lighter, cheaper and easier to start in frost. A diesel uses compression ignition (15–22:1), delivers higher torque and a thermal efficiency of 35–40% against about 25–30% for petrol, so it burns less fuel in continuous operation — at the cost of greater weight and price.

Engine filters — air, oil and fuel

The air filter is critical in dust — on site, dust and sand are the main cause of a seized cylinder. Filters are matched to a specific unit: we carry equivalents for Honda GX, B&S Vanguard and Kohler, including Donaldson Heavy Duty housings and elements — two-stage sets with a cyclonic pre-filter and a main element rated above 99.9% for fine dust. Brands and choosing a replacement — Honda, Loncin, Rato

In the market of small construction engines, Honda with its GX series sets the benchmark for reliability, shaft geometry and mountings — most replacements are built to match it. Loncin and Rato are proven units with comparable power and the same geometry, cheaper by several dozen percent and widely used as both factory drives and replacements. All three are 4-stroke OHV engines — the difference lies mainly in price, service life and the service network.

A replacement is matched not by name but by four parameters: power in HP (within about 10%), shaft type and diameter (most often 19.05 or 25.4 mm, cylindrical or tapered), shaft length and the mounting-bolt spacing; rotation direction and the centrifugal clutch also count. For the reference Honda GX 160 (163 cc, 4.8 HP), a Loncin or Rato replacement of the same power and shaft fits without modifications; filters are matched the same way, by element part number or engine model (Honda GX, Vanguard, Kohler).
