A petrol or diesel power barrow — also called a mini dumper or track dumper — is a self-propelled machine that moves spoil across ground no van can reach, and does it far faster than a hand barrow. Construction-class models usually carry 300–500 kg per run, roughly five to seven full hand barrows, and empty the skip by hydraulic ram or a manual tipping lever.
NORWIT.PL supplies engine-driven barrows mainly under the Altrad Belle and Wacker Neuson badges — wheeled models for yards and haul roads, tracked chassis for soft ground, mud and slopes. Everything here is powered: manually pushed barrows sit in wheelbarrows, and the manual and powered ranges together sit under wheelbarrows and track dumpers. Below we cover how to match the chassis to your ground, what payload you actually need and what to check before you buy.
Power barrows — where an engine beats a hand barrow
An engine-driven barrow hauls concrete, rubble, paving and soil across sites with no haul roads. An engine of roughly 4–9 hp drives the wheels or tracks while the operator walks alongside, steering and working the throttle. At a payload of 300–500 kg one run replaces five to seven trips with a hand barrow, and output does not fade by the eighth hour.
The break-even point sits where distance and gradient begin. Over a short run on finished slab an ordinary barrow is often quicker; beyond 30–50 m, on ramps of 15–25%, or on ground softened by rain, the machine pulls ahead with every load. Machines from Altrad Belle and Wacker Neuson are built for that duty: a frame rated for impact loading, a low centre of gravity and a skip that discharges without a second handling step.
Wheels, 4x4 or tracks — choosing the running gear
Models differ far more in running gear than in the engine. The chassis sets ground pressure, the gradient the machine climbs loaded, and whether it ruts a freshly laid sub-base.
| Feature | Driven wheels | 4x4 drive | Tracks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | slabs, yards, warehouses | unmade ground, gravel | mud, sand, loams and clays |
| Working gradient | usually up to about 10–15% | around 20–30% under load | highest, embankments included |
| Ground pressure | high, concentrated | spread over four wheels | lowest of the three |
| Travel speed | fastest on hard standing | in the order of 3–5 km/h | typically about 2–4 km/h |
Paving crews reach for tracks more often: they spare the sub-base and climb embankments. On large open sites, where runs per hour decide the schedule, all-wheel-drive wheeled machines win. Manually pushed barrows are listed separately under wheelbarrows.
What to look at before you buy
- Payload in kilograms, not litres. A 150 l skip of wet concrete at roughly 2,400 kg/m³ already carries about 360 kg.
- Discharge method. Manual tipping is enough for spreading spoil; a hydraulic ram shortens the cycle for a lone operator.
- Overall width. A standard passage or doorway is about 80–90 cm, so a wider machine forces a detour.
- Wear parts. Filters, cables, the clutch and rubber tracks wear out long before the engine.
Power barrows — questions and answers
How much does a power barrow weigh and how is it moved between sites?
Unladen weight of a construction-class power barrow normally falls between 130 and 350 kg, tracked versions being heavier than wheeled ones of comparable payload because of the frame and the drive to both tracks. They are never lifted by hand: the machine drives onto a trailer up ramps rated for at least 1.5 times its empty weight. A light trailer of 750 kg gross weight is usually enough, provided the bed takes a machine 150–200 cm long. Strap the barrow down at the lashing points given by the manufacturer.
Does operating a power barrow require a plant operator licence?
Small pedestrian-controlled barrows are exempt in Poland from the plant operator certificate required for multi-tonne articulated dumpers. The employer still has to give task-specific training, authorise the worker in writing and issue hearing protection: a single-cylinder engine typically exceeds 85 dB(A) at the operator position, and protectors must be made available from 80 dB(A). Workers under 18 must not run petrol or diesel machines, and exhaust gases rule out work in trenches or enclosed rooms without forced ventilation.
How high does the skip discharge, and will it load straight into a container?
Discharge height in this class is usually 50–90 cm above ground, at a skip tipping angle of some 45–90 degrees. That covers tipping onto a stockpile, into formwork, or into a low-sided skip with a wall up to roughly 80 cm. A standard container 120–150 cm tall is out of reach and needs a loading ramp. Three-way tipping versions also empty sideways, cutting manoeuvring in tight passages.
What does day-to-day servicing of a power barrow involve?
Four-stroke engines burn roughly 0.8–1.5 l of petrol per hour from a 3–6 l tank, giving 3–5 hours of hauling between refills. SAE 10W-30 oil is changed after the first 20 hours of running in, then about every 100 hours or once a season. Daily checks are oil level, air filter and either track tension or tyre pressure. Before storage, drain the fuel system or add a stabiliser: petrol degrades after about 30 days, and stale fuel is the commonest reason a machine will not start after winter.
