A petrol concrete vibrator is an internal (immersion) vibrator in which the vibrating head lowered into fresh concrete is driven by a four-stroke petrol engine instead of mains power. That makes compaction possible wherever there is no electricity on site: footings, strip foundations, wall and column formwork, and scattered jobs spread across a large area. Heads from 25 to 68 mm in diameter run at around 10,000 rpm and compact up to 25 m³ of concrete per hour, driving out the air pockets that otherwise cut the strength of the finished structure.
NORWIT.PL supplies professional petrol vibrators from brands including Enar, Altrad Belle, Beton Trowel and Toolsa, built in three layouts. Vibrating lances such as the VIB-BAR and Power-Bar carry a Honda GX engine on the pole itself, directly above a short shaft; Back Pack units move the engine onto a frame worn on the operator's back and transmit drive through a flexible shaft of about 2 m; BGA-type drive units stand on the ground and feed a hose up to 5 m long. Replacement vibrator heads complete the set, and where a power supply is available the alternatives are 230 V vibrators and 42 V / 200 Hz vibrators. Below we explain how to match head diameter, shaft length and drive layout to the structure you are pouring.
Petrol concrete vibrators — how they work
A petrol vibrator is an internal (immersion) vibrator. Its working part is the vibrator head, also called a poker — a steel cylinder with an eccentric weight, lowered straight into the fresh mix. Spinning at roughly 10,000 rpm, it liquefies the concrete for a moment so that trapped air can rise. The difference from mains-powered models is the drive: instead of a cable and a frequency converter, a four-stroke petrol engine, usually a Honda GX 35 or GX 50 of about 1.3–1.6 hp.
Such a set starts anywhere on site, with no cables and no voltage drop. The trade-off is exhaust fumes, so indoor work in halls and basements is better served by 230 V vibrators or 42 V / 200 Hz vibrators.
Vibrating lance, backpack or flexible-shaft drive
Where the engine sits decides the operator's reach: on the pole in a vibrating lance (Enar VIB-BAR, Toolsa Power-Bar), on a back-worn frame in a backpack vibrator (Enar Back Pack, Beton Trowel HDBP35H), or in a separate ground-standing drive unit (Altrad Belle BGA).
- Vibrating lance — shaft about 0.5 m, around 16 kg; strip foundations, ring beams, pad footings.
- Backpack unit — flexible shaft about 2 m, 12–16 kg on the back; slabs, floor decks, longer pours.
- Separate drive unit — hose up to 5 m, heads 25–68 mm; walls, columns, precast.
Matching head diameter to the structure
Head diameter sets the radius of action — the zone within which concrete is genuinely compacted — and with it hourly output. The denser the reinforcement and the narrower the formwork, the slimmer the head. Petrol sets compact up to 25 m³ per hour.
| Head diameter | Approximate radius of action | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| 25–32 mm | approx. 15–25 cm | columns, narrow formwork, dense reinforcement |
| 38–45 mm | approx. 25–40 cm | strip foundations, ring beams, floor decks |
| 50–58 mm | approx. 40–55 cm | raft foundations, retaining walls |
| 68 mm | approx. 55–70 cm | massive foundations, civil engineering |
Heads are wear parts — aggregate abrades the casing. Replacements sit under vibrator heads; all drive options are under concrete vibrators.
Brands and working technique
Spanish Enar builds VIB-BAR lances on Honda GX 35 and GX 50 engines, plus Back Pack sets with 40 and 45 mm heads. British Altrad Belle supplies BGA drive units that take 25, 45, 55 and 68 mm heads and run at roughly 187 Hz, while Beton Trowel offers the HDBP35H backpack unit. Toolsa adds the Power-Bar with its 35.8 cm³ engine, alongside equipment from Husqvarna Construction.
Lower the head quickly and vertically, withdraw it slowly, and when pouring in layers push it 10–15 cm into the layer below so the two bond. The costliest mistakes are over-vibrating, striking the reinforcement and pushing the mix sideways. The surface is then levelled with vibratory screeds, and formwork compacted from the outside with external vibrators.
Frequently asked questions about petrol vibrators
When should I choose a petrol vibrator instead of an electric one?
A petrol vibrator earns its place wherever there is neither a 230 V connection nor a generator: foundations in open ground and retaining wall formwork. A Honda GX 35 or GX 50 engine of about 1.3–1.6 hp starts anywhere on the plot, with no cables and no voltage drop. Electric 230 V or 42 V models are the better choice indoors, in halls and basements where fumes are a problem.
Which head diameter suits foundations and which suits columns?
Foundations, strip footings and slabs normally take heads of 45–58 mm, giving a radius of action of 25–55 cm, and massive elements take 68 mm. Columns, narrow formwork and densely reinforced sections call for 25–38 mm, slim enough to pass between the bars without touching them. Petrol sets compact up to 25 m³ per hour.
How long should concrete be vibrated at a single insertion point?
Five to fifteen seconds per insertion point is usually enough, depending on mix consistency and head diameter. Stop when bubbles stop rising and a thin layer of cement laitance appears. Withdraw the head at roughly 8–10 cm per second and space points on a grid of about 1.5 times the radius of action. Vibrating much longer over-compacts the mix: aggregate sinks and the hardened slab dusts.
What is the difference between a backpack vibrator and a vibrating lance?
On a vibrating lance such as the Enar VIB-BAR or Toolsa Power-Bar the engine sits on the pole and the head works on a shaft of roughly 0.5 m, at about 16 kg in the hands. On a Back Pack unit the drive rests on a frame worn on the back, weighing 12–16 kg, and torque travels down a flexible shaft of about 2 m, so the operator holds only the head. Lances reposition faster, backpacks tire less on long pours.
How should a petrol vibrator be maintained on site?
Clean mortar off the head and shaft after every pour — hardened residue jams the shaft and destroys the seals. On four-stroke Honda GX 35 and GX 50 engines check the oil level before each start and inspect the air filter, which clogs fast in site dust. Heads of 25–68 mm and the shaft are consumables: replace them once vibration drops below the working 10,000 rpm or play develops in the coupling.
