A light, forward-travel vibratory plate of 70–100 kg with a polyurethane mat and a base plate around 40–50 cm wide is best for laying paving stones. The key factors are the mat and a centrifugal force of 15–25 kN matched to the thickness of the pavers.

A plate compactor for paving stones is a light forward-travel plate of 70–100 kg with a polyurethane mat that seats pavers without scratching their face. A soil compactor is heavier, often 100–500 kg, is frequently reversible (drives forward and back) and works with a centrifugal force above 25 kN to compact bedding, sub-base and load-bearing layers. For paving you take a light model with a mat; for the substrate — a heavier one.

A polyurethane mat (also called a paving or vibration-isolation pad) is practically mandatory for paving stones. A pad about 8–10 mm thick separates the steel base plate from the surface, so the pavers do not get scratched and the chamfers do not chip under a load of 15–25 kN. It matters most on coloured and shot-blasted pavers, whose face is easy to damage.

Pavers are laid on a cement-and-sand bedding layer 3–5 cm thick, with even joints of 3–5 mm, after which dry sand is swept into the joints. Next you fit the polyurethane mat to the plate and make the first pass — around the perimeter, then in overlapping strips at a steady pace. After topping up the sand you repeat the pass; usually 2–3 passes are enough.

An electric plate compactor, including battery models, produces no exhaust and runs more quietly, which suits garages, basements and urban zones; it is powered by a 230 V mains supply or a battery. The petrol version with a gasoline engine gives independence from the mains and continuous work on large, open sites. Both have a comparable weight of 70–100 kg and a force of 15–25 kN.

The price of a plate compactor for paving stones depends on the weight, drive and brand. Light forward-travel plates of 70–100 kg usually start from a few thousand zloty, and electric and battery versions tend to cost more than comparable petrol ones because of the battery and motor. A centrifugal force of 15–25 kN is right for finished paving stones. That dynamic pressure seats the pavers in the bedding and compacts the joints, and when used with a mat it does not crush the face. A force below 15 kN suits thin pavers and pavements, while values above 25 kN are reserved for sub-base, bedding and soil.

Paving stones can be damaged by a plate that is too heavy, by working without a mat or by excessive force above 25 kN. A steel base plate without a mat scratches the face and chips the chamfers, and overloaded pavers crack and settle unevenly. The risk is reduced by a light 70–100 kg model with an 8–10 mm mat and by making 2–3 gentle passes instead of one heavy one.

Compaction output depends on the plate width and the working pace. A base plate 40–50 cm wide, moving at 20–25 m/min, seats several hundred m² of paving per hour, counting 2–3 passes over the same area.
