A cross line laser is a self-leveling laser level that projects two lines intersecting at a right angle — one horizontal and one vertical — onto walls, floor and ceiling, while 360° versions sweep a full plane around the whole room. It replaces the spirit level and plumb bob: a pendulum compensator sets the lines to true horizontal and vertical on its own, within a range of typically ±3–4° and with an accuracy on the order of ±0.2–0.3 mm/m. The working range is usually a dozen or so metres by naked eye and up to about 50–100 m with a detector, which is why a cross line laser suits tiling, drywall installation, running electrical and plumbing services, building partition walls and finishing work.
At NORWIT.PL we stock cross line lasers primarily from the Nivel System and Geo Fennel brands — from simple 2-line lasers, through multi-line 3D and 360° models, to green-beam versions that stay clearly visible in bright interiors and outdoors. The range covers both red and green lasers, as well as kits with a detector, tripod and pole. You can buy this equipment on the Nivel System and Geo Fennel brand pages, and a wider choice of measuring instruments in the laser levels category. Below we explain how to match the number of lines, the beam colour and the accessories to your type of work.
Cross line laser — how it works and where it performs best
A cross line laser (also called a cross line level laser) projects two lines intersecting at a right angle — one horizontal and one vertical — forming a visible cross on the wall. In 360° models the horizontal line closes into a full plane around the room, with verticals running up the wall from floor to ceiling. The heart of the device is the pendulum compensator (the self-leveling mechanism): suspended on magnets, it sets the beam to true horizontal and vertical within a range of typically ±3–4°, warning with a flashing beam when the surface is too steeply tilted. Line accuracy is typically ±0.2–0.3 mm/m, i.e. about ±2–3 mm over 10 m.
In practice a cross line laser replaces the spirit level, plumb bob and chalk line: set up once, it projects a reference across the whole wall while the operator keeps both hands free. It performs well for tiling, drywall, partitions, positioning sockets and radiators, and electrical and plumbing services. At NORWIT.PL we stock cross line lasers primarily from the Nivel System and Geo Fennel brands.
Types of cross line lasers — from a 2D cross to full 360°
A laser's usefulness comes down to the number and layout of the lines: a simple cross suits work on a single wall, while leveling around the perimeter of a room calls for a 360° model. The table below organises the cross line laser types available in the laser levels category.
| Laser type | Characteristics | Typical use | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-line cross | one horizontal and one vertical line forming a cross straight ahead of the device | laying tiles, fitting sockets, cabinets, pictures, small finishing jobs | Geo Fennel FL 40-PowerCross SP |
| Multi-line cross | extra lines and verticals, some projected to the sides and to the rear | tiling across several walls, drywall, service installations | Geo Fennel FL 40-PowerCross Plus SP |
| Multi-line 3D / 360° | full 360° horizontal plane around the room plus verticals along the wall | perimeter leveling, suspended ceilings, screeds | Nivel System CL4D-B, CL4D-G |
| Green beam | a green diode noticeably brighter to the eye, longer naked-eye range | bright interiors, work near windows, greater distances | Geo Fennel FLG 40-PowerCross Plus GREEN SP, Nivel System CL4D-G |
For longer distances and outdoor work it is worth pairing the laser with a receiver from the receivers and detectors category and a tripod or pole from the tripods and staffs category; ready-made sets are available among the laser level kits.
Popular cross line laser models at NORWIT.PL
The range spans simple finishing crosses to multi-line 3D models with a green beam; exact parameters (number of lines, range with a detector, IP rating) are given on the product pages.
| Model | Brand | Type and beam | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| FL 40-PowerCross SP | Geo Fennel | cross line, red beam | interior finishing, fitting tiles and fixtures |
| FL 40-PowerCross Plus SP | Geo Fennel | extended cross line, red beam | tiling, drywall, service installations |
| FLG 40-PowerCross Plus GREEN SP | Geo Fennel | extended cross line, green beam | bright rooms, greater distances |
| CL4D-B | Nivel System | multi-line 3D 360°, beam colour on the product page | perimeter leveling, ceilings, screeds |
| CL4D-G | Nivel System | multi-line 3D 360°, green beam | difficult lighting, work facing windows |
For the battery-powered Geo Fennel FL 40 series, a charger and Li-Ion batteries are available separately for all-day work without swapping cells. Mounts, target plates and beam-visibility glasses are listed with the individual models.
Green or red cross line laser — which beam to choose
Beam colour is the most common dilemma when buying. A green diode (about 515–520 nm) is up to about 4 times brighter to the eye than a red one (about 635–650 nm) at the same power, so green lines stand out clearly in bright interiors; red is cheaper and easier on the battery.
| Feature | Red beam | Green beam |
|---|---|---|
| Wavelength | about 635–650 nm | about 515–520 nm |
| Visibility to the eye | good in shade and dimly lit interiors | up to about 4× brighter, visible in strong light |
| Outdoor work | limited, usually needs a detector | better, line visible from a greater distance |
| Power consumption | lower, longer battery runtime | higher, the green diode draws more power |
| Price | lower | higher |
| Best for | interiors, finishing work, tighter budgets | bright rooms, demanding conditions, greater distances |
For indoor work a red laser is enough, while bright rooms and greater distances call for a green version such as the Geo Fennel FLG 40-PowerCross Plus GREEN SP or Nivel System CL4D-G. Outdoors the detector decides anyway.
Cross line laser with a detector and tripod — working outdoors
Outdoors in full sun no beam — not even a green one — is visible to the naked eye from a dozen or so metres. The answer is a detector (laser receiver): a small unit clamped to a staff or pole that uses an audible signal and a display readout to show where the laser plane falls. A detector extends the working range to about 50–100 m and lets you work in strong light; the laser must, however, support pulse mode — check this in the model description. Receivers are available in the receivers and detectors category.
The second essential is stable support. A tripod with a 5/8" or 1/4" thread sets the laser at any height and levels it precisely, while a spring-loaded floor-to-ceiling pole helps with suspended ceilings. Tripods, poles and leveling staffs are in the tripods and staffs category.
Frequently asked questions about cross line lasers
What is a cross line laser used for and where does it perform best?
A cross line laser projects intersecting horizontal and vertical lines onto the wall, giving a permanent reference without a spirit level or chalk line. It is used for laying tiles and panels, installing drywall, positioning sockets and radiators, and running services. An accuracy on the order of ±0.2–0.3 mm/m and self-leveling within ±3–4° mean the reference covers the whole wall, and in 360° models the entire room perimeter.
Which 360-degree cross line laser should I choose for home versus a construction site?
For home renovations a compact 2-line laser with a red beam is enough, e.g. the Geo Fennel FL 40-PowerCross SP, with an accuracy of about ±0.3 mm/m and a range of a dozen or so metres. On a construction site, where perimeter leveling and bright light matter, a multi-line 3D 360° model with a green beam is better, e.g. the Nivel System CL4D-G, paired with a detector that extends the range to about 50–100 m, often with an IP54 rating.
What is the difference between a cross line laser, a line laser and a point laser?
A line laser projects a single line — horizontal or vertical — for simple marking on one plane. A cross line laser shows both lines at once as a cross, and 360° models close the horizontal into a full plane around the room. A point laser draws no lines but projects 3–5 plumb and level dots for transferring axes between floors.
What is the difference between a green and a red cross line laser?
A green beam has a wavelength of about 515–520 nm and is up to about 4 times brighter to the eye than a red one (about 635–650 nm) at the same power, so green lines are clearly visible in bright interiors and further by naked eye. A red beam is cheaper and puts less strain on the battery. In open ground under the sun the detector decides anyway, regardless of colour.
How much does a good cross line laser cost and what affects the price?
Price depends on the number of lines, beam colour, range and accessories. Simple 2-line lasers with a red beam cost roughly from a few hundred PLN, multi-line 3D 360° models usually from about 1000–1500 PLN, and green versions with a detector and tripod reach several thousand PLN. Current prices for Nivel System and Geo Fennel models are on the product pages.
Is a cross line laser self-leveling and how does auto-leveling work?
The vast majority of cross line lasers are self-leveling. This is handled by a pendulum compensator — a mechanism suspended on magnets that uses gravity to set the lines to true horizontal and vertical within a range of typically ±3–4°. When the surface tilt exceeds that range, the device warns with a flashing beam, and a manual mode with the pendulum locked is used for working at an angle. Accuracy is typically ±0.2–0.3 mm/m, i.e. about ±2–3 mm over 10 m.
How do you use a cross line laser with a detector outdoors in sunlight?
Outdoors in sunlight the beam is invisible to the naked eye from as little as a dozen or so metres, which is why a detector (laser receiver) is used. The laser switches to pulse mode and the detector clamps to a staff or pole; an audible signal and a readout show where the plane falls, extending the range to about 50–100 m. The model must support work with a detector — the simplest interior lasers lack this function.
Do you need a tripod or pole for a cross line laser?
For work near the floor you can stand the laser on a flat surface, but a tripod improves accuracy and convenience. A tripod with a 5/8" or 1/4" thread sets the device at any height and levels it, while a spring-loaded floor-to-ceiling pole is indispensable for suspended ceilings. Choose tripods, poles and staffs in the tripods and staffs category, matching the mounting thread to your model.
What working range does a 360° cross line laser have?
The range depends on beam colour, lighting and whether a detector is used. Without a receiver, by naked eye, a 360° cross line laser usually works within a radius of a dozen or so up to about 20–40 m indoors; a green beam can be visible further than a red one. With a detector connected the range grows to about 50–100 m, making outdoor work possible. Exact figures for a given model are on its product page.
Cross line laser Nivel System or Geo Fennel — which model should I choose?
Both brands are professional gear with an accuracy on the order of ±0.2–0.3 mm/m. Nivel System (the CL4D-B and CL4D-G series) offers a broad choice of multi-line 3D 360° lasers with an optional green beam — good for perimeter leveling and difficult lighting. Geo Fennel (the FL 40-PowerCross SP and the green FLG 40-PowerCross Plus GREEN SP) is known for rugged finishing crosses. We service both makers and stock their accessories.
