A diamond core drill bit (core bit) is a tubular tool with diamond segments on its face that cuts a cylindrical hole in the material and leaves a core behind — instead of hammering concrete apart, it grinds through it with diamond. Core drilling produces clean holes in concrete, reinforced concrete, stone and masonry for plumbing, ventilation, cables and electrical boxes, in diameters from about Ø 8 mm to over Ø 350 mm. The same bit is also used to take control cores — concrete samples for compressive strength testing.
At NORWIT.PL we carry professional diamond core drill bits and core-drilling accessories — primarily by Tyrolit, as well as Toolsa and Husqvarna Construction — in wet-drilling and dry-drilling versions, with 1 1/4″ and R 1/2″ connection threads. You match the bit to a specific material and diameter, and complete the set with 100/200/300 mm extension rods available on the Tyrolit brand page. For core drilling you will also want concrete core drills and power units for core drills, and related tools are in diamond blades. Below we explain how to match the bit type, diameter and thread to your material and the scale of the job.
Diamond core drill bit — what it is and how it drills into concrete
A diamond core drill bit (core bit) is a steel tube tipped with diamond segments — a metal matrix sintered with diamond powder. The bit does not hammer the material apart; it grinds it around the circumference and cuts a cylindrical hole, leaving a core in the middle. This method, called core drilling, produces a clean, smooth hole with no cracking around the edge — unlike a percussion (hammer) bit. That is why diamond core bits are the standard wherever precision matters: in concrete, reinforced concrete, natural stone and masonry.
Diameters range from about Ø 8 mm to over Ø 350 mm, and the bit is also used to take control cores — concrete samples for compressive strength testing. At NORWIT.PL you will find professional core bits and accessories, primarily by Tyrolit, as well as Toolsa and Husqvarna Construction — the former are available on the Tyrolit brand page.
Types of diamond core bits — segmented, sintered, electroplated
The intended use of a core bit is decided by how the diamond is fixed to its face, as the table below summarizes. A segmented bit (laser-welded segments with gaps that clear the slurry) is built for concrete and reinforced concrete, offers the highest durability and works mainly wet. A sintered bit with a continuous rim cuts stone and ceramic materials smoothly, while an electroplated bit — thin and inexpensive — handles small diameters in porcelain stoneware, tiles and glass but is not suitable for reinforced concrete.
| Bit type | Face construction | Material and use |
|---|---|---|
| Segmented (laser-welded) | diamond segments with gaps, laser-welded | concrete, reinforced concrete, hard stone; wet; highest durability |
| Sintered continuous rim | diamond layer around the whole rim | stone, ceramic materials; smooth edge without chipping |
| Electroplated (bonded) | single diamond layer bonded by electroplating | porcelain stoneware, tiles, glass; small diameters Ø 6–68 mm; shorter life |
The NORWIT.PL range focuses on segmented bits for concrete and reinforced concrete and on core-drilling accessories; electroplated bits for porcelain stoneware fall outside our specialization. Related cutting tools are in diamond blades, and the full department sits under cutting, drilling, milling and grinding.
Bit diameter and its use — from anchors to control cores
The bit diameter is matched to the type of hole — from few-millimeter bits for anchors, through the standard Ø 68 mm for electrical boxes, to bits of ten to twenty centimeters for ventilation and chimneys. The largest diameters serve big service penetrations and control cores. Exact diameters of Tyrolit models are given on the product pages.
| Bit diameter | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Ø 8–30 mm | anchors, chemical anchors, fixings, small holes |
| Ø 52–68 mm | plumbing pipes, electrical boxes (Ø 68 mm standard) |
| Ø 82–132 mm | service conduits, heat recovery, pipe penetrations |
| Ø 150–200 mm | ventilation, chimneys, connections |
| Ø 250–350+ mm | large service penetrations, control cores (concrete samples) |
The larger the diameter, the lower the speed and the higher the torque — big bits require a rig-mounted core drill, not a handheld drill. Choosing the right machine is easier with the concrete core drills in our range.
Wet or dry drilling — which method to choose
Wet drilling cools the bit with water fed near the segments (usually about 2–4 l/min). The water lowers the diamond temperature, flushes out the slurry and extends tool life — it is the method for reinforced concrete, hard concrete and large diameters. Dry drilling removes dust with an M-class vacuum instead of water: it gives mobility without mud, but at smaller diameters and in softer materials. For reinforced concrete, wet drilling is recommended.
| Feature | Wet drilling | Dry drilling |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling | water, usually about 2–4 l/min | dust extraction / M-class vacuum |
| Material | reinforced concrete, hard concrete, stone | concrete, brick, masonry, aerated concrete |
| Equipment | rig-mounted core drill with water supply | handheld drill with a vacuum |
| Typical diameters | full range up to Ø 350 mm and more | usually up to Ø 150 mm |
| Advantage | less dust, longer bit life | mobility, no water or mud |
Wet drilling sometimes needs power and pressurized water — for work without mains access, power units for core drills and cutters come in handy. Blunted segments can be resharpened with a dressing stone.
Connection threads and extension rods — 1 1/4″ and R 1/2″
The bit connects to the core drill spindle through a connection thread. Tyrolit accessories use two standards: 1 1/4″ UNC (the imperial thread, standard for large bits Ø 82 mm and up on rig-mounted core drills) and R 1/2″ (the thread of smaller bits and adapters for handheld drills). The bit thread must match the machine spindle — if they differ, an adapter is used, so it is the first thing to check before buying.
When the wall or slab is thicker than the bit is long, an extension rod for core drill bits is screwed in between the spindle and the bit. NORWIT.PL stocks Tyrolit 100, 200 and 300 mm extensions in both thread versions.
| Extension length | Thread | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 100 mm | 1 1/4″ / R 1/2″ | extra depth in partition walls |
| 200 mm | 1 1/4″ / R 1/2″ | slabs and medium-thickness walls |
| 300 mm | 1 1/4″ / R 1/2″ | thick walls, chaining extensions in series |
Frequently asked questions about diamond core drill bits
What is a diamond core drill bit used for?
A diamond core drill bit (core bit) is a tubular tool with diamond segments on its face that cuts a cylindrical hole and leaves a core behind. It makes clean holes in concrete, reinforced concrete, stone and masonry for services: plumbing pipes Ø 52–110 mm, ventilation Ø 100–200 mm or electrical boxes Ø 68 mm. Diameters range from about Ø 8 mm to over Ø 350 mm. Unlike a percussion bit, the core bit does not hammer the material apart but grinds it, giving a smooth hole without cracking.
How do you drill into concrete with a diamond core bit?
The bit is mounted on the core drill spindle via a 1 1/4″ or R 1/2″ thread, and the machine is stabilized on an anchored or vacuum base plate. Drilling starts at lower speed, then you keep a steady feed pressure and cooling: wet with water at about 2–4 l/min, dry with an M-class vacuum. Speed drops as diameter grows — from a few thousand rpm at Ø 50 mm to a few hundred at Ø 200 mm.
What is the difference between wet drilling and dry drilling?
Wet drilling cools the bit with water (about 2–4 l/min), which lowers segment temperature, flushes out the slurry and extends tool life — it is the method for reinforced concrete, hard concrete and large diameters up to Ø 350 mm, done with a core drill fed by water. Dry drilling removes dust with an M-class vacuum and is used for concrete, brick and masonry, usually up to Ø 150 mm, with a handheld drill. For reinforced concrete, wet drilling is recommended.
Which diamond core bit should you choose for reinforced concrete?
For reinforced concrete you choose a laser-welded segmented bit designed for wet drilling and for cutting through rebar. The hard segment bond withstands contact with steel, and water cooling at about 2–4 l/min protects it from overheating. The work is done with a rig-mounted core drill, not a handheld one. For diameters over Ø 100 mm it is worth using a 100–300 mm extension. Bits of this kind come primarily from Tyrolit — electroplated bits are not suitable for reinforced concrete.
How much does a diamond core drill bit for concrete cost?
The price of a diamond core bit depends mainly on diameter and segment class. Small Ø 25–50 mm bits for dry drilling usually cost from about PLN 150–400, popular service diameters Ø 68–132 mm roughly PLN 400–1,200, and large Ø 200–350 mm bits for wet reinforced-concrete drilling from several hundred to several thousand zloty. Accessories add to the cost: 100/200/300 mm extensions and a thread adapter. Current prices of Tyrolit models are given on the product pages.
What is the difference between a diamond bit and a carbide (TCT) bit?
A diamond bit has segments of diamond powder sintered with metal on its face and grinds the material, so it handles concrete, reinforced concrete, granite and hard stone. A carbide bit (TCT, tungsten carbide) cuts with tungsten-carbide edges and works in softer materials: brick, aerated concrete, hollow blocks and masonry — it is cheaper, but blunts quickly in reinforced concrete and will not cut steel. For Ø 100–200 mm holes in reinforced concrete, diamond core bits are used.
How do you match the core bit diameter to the core drill?
The bit diameter is matched to core-drill power and hole type. Handheld diamond drills usually take bits up to Ø 100–130 mm, rig-mounted core drills up to Ø 200–250 mm, and the most powerful units above Ø 350 mm. The bit thread (1 1/4″ or R 1/2″) must fit the spindle — if it differs, an adapter is used.
What is an extension rod for core drill bits for?
An extension rod for core drill bits is a part fitted between the core-drill spindle and the bit that increases drilling depth. It comes in 100, 200 and 300 mm lengths, with a 1 1/4″ or R 1/2″ thread matched to the bit and machine. Extensions are used when the wall or slab is thicker than the usable length of the bit — for example when drilling through a 40–60 cm wall. They can be chained in series up to the required depth.
What thread do Tyrolit core bits have — 1 1/4″ or R 1/2″?
Tyrolit bits and extensions come in two thread standards: 1 1/4″ UNC and R 1/2″. The 1 1/4″ (imperial, UNC) thread is the standard for large bits Ø 82 mm and up on rig-mounted core drills. The R 1/2″ (BSP) thread is used on smaller bits and adapters for handheld drills. The thread is matched to the machine spindle — if it differs, you need a 1 1/4″ to R 1/2″ adapter, available together with the Tyrolit 100/200/300 mm extensions.
Can one diamond bit drill concrete, stone and granite?
A single universal bit will manage concrete, natural stone and granite, but at the cost of durability and speed — segments and bond are optimized for a specific hardness. Bits for reinforced concrete have hard segments resistant to steel, while porcelain stoneware and tiles need thin electroplated bits Ø 6–68 mm. A company doing varied holes is better off with 2–3 dedicated bits rather than one universal one — for concrete and reinforced concrete we recommend laser-welded segmented Tyrolit bits for wet drilling.
