An electric disc cutter is a mains-powered concrete saw in which an electric motor drives the diamond blade through a belt or gearbox, with no fuel burnt at the point of work. Because nothing is combusted, the machine can cut inside buildings, in basements, tunnels and ventilation shafts, where a petrol saw would call for forced ventilation or is banned outright.
Machines of this type are built in single-phase (230 V) and three-phase (400 V) versions, normally running blades of 300–400 mm for a cutting depth in the region of 100–145 mm. An electric motor holds its torque under steady load and never stops for refuelling, which suits continuous cutting across a full shift. The machines come mainly from husqvarna construction, dr. schulze and tyrolit.
Where a site has no power supply at all, look at combustion disc cutters; for short cuts made on the move, see battery-powered disc cutters.
How an electric disc cutter works
Drive travels from the mains motor to the blade spindle through a belt or a gearbox. A 230 V or 400 V supply takes the place of a two-stroke engine, so there is no exhaust to extract and no fuel mixture to prepare on site. Rated power usually falls between 2.5 and 5 kW, and diamond blades of 300–400 mm give a cutting depth in the region of 100–145 mm in a single pass. The motor keeps its torque under a steady load and does not fade as a tank empties, so cutting speed stays repeatable along long expansion joints. Working weight is typically 8–12 kg.
Electric drive versus petrol and battery
The drive you need follows from where the work happens and how long each cut runs, rather than from rated power alone. The table below compares the options across the disc cutters range.
| Criterion | Electric | Petrol | Battery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work in enclosed spaces | yes, no exhaust fumes | not without forced ventilation | yes, no exhaust fumes |
| Continuous cutting through a shift | yes, no refuelling breaks | yes, with refuelling | no, limited by cell capacity |
| Typical blade diameter | 300–400 mm | 300–400 mm | approx. 230 mm |
| Infrastructure required | 230 V / 400 V circuit | fuel and mixing | battery and charger |
| Working weight | approx. 8–12 kg | approx. 8–11 kg | under 6 kg |
On a site with no power at all the alternative remains combustion disc cutters, while short cuts made on the move suit battery-powered disc cutters. Cutting tooling comes from the concrete diamond blades section: reinforced concrete calls for a segment with a harder bond, asphalt for a soft segment that keeps exposing fresh diamond.
Frequently asked questions — electric disc cutters
What power supply does an electric disc cutter need?
Electric disc cutters come in two supply variants. Single-phase machines run from a 230 V socket and draw in the order of 12–16 A, so the circuit should carry a type C 16 A breaker — a type B can trip on motor start-up alone. Three-phase 400 V machines need a 16 A or 32 A industrial socket, but they spread the draw across three phases and hold a full 4–5 kW through a long cut. Check what else the distribution board is already feeding before plugging in.
Which extension lead suits an electric cutter, and what conductor cross-section?
Conductor cross-section follows the length of the supply run. Up to 25 m on a 230 V machine, a lead with 2.5 mm² conductors is enough; beyond 25 m, move up to 4 mm². A cable that is too thin drops voltage, and the motor then loses torque, runs hot and wears out sooner. Cable left coiled on a drum behaves like a winding and heats up further, so unwind the drum completely. For wet cutting, protect the whole supply run with a 30 mA residual current device.
Can an electric disc cutter be used indoors?
Electric drive produces no exhaust gases, so the machine suits basements, tunnels, shafts and building interiors where petrol equipment would demand forced ventilation. Silica dust still has to be dealt with. Wet cutting with a continuous water feed binds dust at the blade and cuts airborne dust by more than 90%, and dry cutting calls for extraction with class M or H filtration. The operator works in hearing protection, eye protection and a respirator, and the supply is protected by a 30 mA residual current device.
Is an electric cutter suitable for a full working shift?
A mains supply gives an uninterrupted source of energy, which is why an electric machine earns its place on long expansion joints and repetitive wall cutting. Nothing stops for refuelling or for a battery swap, and a cordless machine typically gives only a dozen or so minutes of cutting per pack. The limit here is motor temperature: under full feed pressure, ease off every quarter of an hour or so and let the fan cool the windings. With a 350–400 mm blade at 125–145 mm depth, output then depends mostly on the condition of the diamond segments.
Why buy an electric disc cutter from NORWIT.PL
We supply professional equipment built for daily site work rather than occasional DIY use. The range covers machines from husqvarna construction, dr. schulze and tyrolit, along with the matching cutting tooling. We advise on matching drive and blade to the material, and orders are placed online. See also the cutting, drilling, scarifying and grinding section.
