A hydraulic power pack is a portable power source for impact tools: a petrol, diesel or electric motor drives a pump that feeds oil at roughly 100–160 bar into the tool through two hoses fitted with quick couplers. A power pack paired with a hydraulic demolition hammer works anywhere mains power and compressed air are out of reach — breaking out foundations and floor slabs, trenching and repairing buried utilities.
NORWIT.PL supplies mainly Altrad Belle hydraulic power packs. Units of this class typically deliver 20–30 l/min of oil flow and are matched to the EHTMA classes that professional breakers are built around. The full demolition range sits in the demolition hammers section, and the non-hydraulic alternative is a petrol-driven demolition hammer. Below we explain how to match flow, pressure and drive type to a specific tool.
A power pack is the energy source, not the tool
A hydraulic power pack (or hydraulic power unit) does no breaking on its own. Its motor turns a pump that pushes oil down the pressure hose to the tool, and the return hose brings it back through a filter and a cooler. Only the breaker turns oil flow into impact energy. A typical unit runs at 100–160 bar with an output of 20–30 l/min and carries a 15–30 l reservoir.
This category covers the power sources alone. The tools sit under hydraulic demolition hammers and hydraulic disc cutters, while units built for core drilling belong to power packs for core drills and disc cutters. Do not confuse them with generators, which make electricity, not oil pressure.
Flow, pressure and EHTMA classes
Two figures drive the selection: oil flow in litres per minute and working pressure in bar. The industry sorts them into EHTMA classes, printed on the data plates of tools and power packs alike. Too little flow means a weak, slow blow; too much overheats the oil and overloads the tool. Altrad Belle model names state both values — a 20-140 variant gives roughly 20 l/min at around 140 bar.
| EHTMA class | Oil flow | Pressure | Typical tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| B | approx. 13.5 l/min | approx. 170 bar | light breakers |
| C | approx. 20 l/min | approx. 138–140 bar | mid-weight breakers, disc cutters |
| D | approx. 30 l/min | approx. 138–140 bar | heavy breakers, continuous duty |
Classes C and D cover most hand-held breakers used on concrete and asphalt; the packs listed here come from Altrad Belle.
Engine-driven or electric power pack
The drive is chosen by the site, not by power — oil flow can be identical either way. Engine-driven units run independently of the mains. Electric versions on 230 V or 400 V run quieter and emit no fumes, the only option inside warehouses and industrial buildings.
| Feature | Engine-driven power pack | Electric power pack |
|---|---|---|
| Energy supply | petrol or diesel, no mains needed | 230 V or 400 V socket |
| Use in enclosed spaces | no | yes |
| Where it works | trenches, roadworks, open ground | warehouses, tunnels, built-up areas |
For continuous duty, check the oil cooler before buying; the rest of the range sits under demolition hammers.
Hydraulic power packs — frequently asked questions
What is a hydraulic power pack and what is it used for on site?
A hydraulic power pack is a portable power source for impact tools. Its motor drives a pump delivering oil at 100–160 bar to a tool joined by two hoses with quick couplers; the oil returns to a 15–30 l tank through a filter and a cooler. The pack itself breaks nothing — it feeds a breaker or a disc cutter. Needing neither mains power nor a compressor, the set works in trenches and on emergency utility repairs.
What oil flow does a power pack need for a hydraulic breaker?
Flow follows the EHTMA class stamped on the tool. Class C, the most common on site, calls for roughly 20 l/min at around 138–140 bar; heavier class D needs about 30 l/min. A class C breaker fed by a 13.5 l/min unit hits slower and softer, while excess flow raises oil temperature and strains the valve block. If the tool fleet is set to grow, a pack one class up with adjustable flow is the safer buy.
When does an engine-driven power pack beat an electric one?
The site decides, not the power rating. An engine-driven pack runs without mains power and suits trenches and open ground, at the cost of noise and fumes. An electric version on 230 V or 400 V runs quietly and emits nothing, so it is the only choice for warehouses, tunnels and car parks. Oil flow is often identical — around 20 l/min in EHTMA class C.
Power pack or compressor — how should a demolition breaker be powered?
Hydraulic drive carries energy in oil at 100–160 bar, pneumatic drive in air at roughly 6–7 bar. A mid-weight pneumatic breaker calls for a compressor rated at some 2–5 m³/min — a heavier and louder machine than a 20–30 l/min power pack. The hydraulic set stays compact and loses little over long hoses, which is why it wins on spot demolition and emergency utility work. A compressor pays off where it feeds several tools at once.
