Levels and Measurements

A laser level emits a visible beam or plane of light, so one person can read the level, and line models typically hold ±0.2–0.3 mm/m accuracy. An optical level is a telescope with an automatic compensator, 20–32× magnification and ±1.5–2.0 mm accuracy per 1 km of double-run leveling — reading needs a staff and a second person, but it is rugged and works without power. Choose a laser for quick finishing work and solo jobs; choose an optical level for the highest precision of elevation over a large site.

For house building, screeds and a terrace a cross-line or rotary laser level with ±0.2–0.3 mm/m accuracy and a 15–40 m working range without a detector works well. The horizontal plane makes it easy to level formwork, screeds and floors, while the vertical line sets partition walls and cladding. On a terrace and outdoors, where the beam fades in daylight, add a laser receiver that raises the working range to 50–70 m and beyond.

A rotary level (rotary laser) spins the beam through 360°, creating a full reference plane over large areas — halls, roads, yards and open ground. Its working range with a receiver reaches a radius of 150–250 m, that is several hundred metres in diameter. A laser receiver (detector) is essential outdoors and at long range, when the eye cannot see the beam in sunlight: mounted on a staff, it signals a hit on the plane with sound and a display to within ±1 mm.

On an open site a rotary level with a laser receiver works within a radius of 150–250 m, which corresponds to a working diameter of about 300–500 m. Leveling accuracy stays within ±1.0–1.5 mm over 10 m, and the detector signals a hit on the plane with a resolution down to ±1 mm. Real range depends on the laser class and detector sensitivity, so we give the exact figures on the Nivel System model pages.

A laser rangefinder (distance meter) measures distance, area and volume with a single laser pulse to ±1.0–2.0 mm and a range of 40 to 200 m, depending on the model. A level, in turn, sets a reference level or plane rather than a distance. Use a rangefinder for a quick take-off of rooms, heights and areas (for example when pricing work), and a level for leveling and transferring an elevation datum.

Nivel System line laser levels reach around ±0.2–0.3 mm/m, rotary models ±1.0–1.5 mm over 10 m, and optical levels ±1.5–2.0 mm per 1 km of double-run leveling. Laser sensors (receivers), such as the RD series and the CLS line, detect the beam to within ±1 mm and work with both red and green lasers. Exact parameters differ across the CLS, NL and RD series and are given on the product pages.

Optical and laser levels use surveying tripods with a 5/8" (inch) thread, most often extending to a height of 1.6–1.7 m. A leveling staff (rod) is a telescopic graduated batten in 3, 4 and 5 m lengths, read through the telescope of an optical level or with a laser detector. The tripod and staff are matched to the instrument's mount; compatible Nivel System models are gathered in one subcategory.

A ready level kit contains matched components — a laser or optical level, a 5/8" tripod, a 3–5 m staff, and often a detector and a case — chosen to work together, so there is no need to check thread and mount compatibility. A kit is often 10–20% cheaper than buying the parts separately and is ready to work straight away. Assembling piece by piece pays off when you already own a tripod or staff; for crews starting out, a kit is the safer choice.

Surveyor marking paint is a fast-drying spray for durable marking of survey points, routes and excavations — it covers on soil, asphalt and concrete, and a 500 ml can lasts for several dozen marks. A measuring wheel (surveyor's wheel) measures route length by rolling a wheel about 1 m in circumference, with accuracy of around 0.1–0.2% of the distance, and works well on roads and plots. An angle meter (angle finder) measures incline and opening angles, for example when fitting structures and roofs.

The price of a laser level depends on type and range. Compact cross-line lasers for finishing, with ±0.2–0.3 mm/m accuracy, are the cheapest segment, optical levels with a 24–32× telescope sit in the middle, and rotary levels with a detector reaching 150–250 m together with full kits are the most expensive. Current prices for Nivel System and Geo Fennel models, and kit promotions, are on the product pages.
