A Rato engine is a single-cylinder air-cooled power unit built to the dimensional standard used across small construction machinery — as an overhead-valve (OHV) petrol unit rated at roughly 5.7–12 HP, or as a diesel rated at 10–24 HP. It drives vibratory plates, generators, water pumps, floor saws and mortar mixers, and because the shaft geometry follows that standard, it also serves as a drop-in replacement for a worn-out unit with no modification to the machine frame.
NORWIT.PL supplies Rato petrol engines R210, R300, R390 and R420 alongside the diesel RV340D, RV450D and RV740D — from drives for light equipment up to units for generator sets and machines running under constant load. The category sits within our petrol engines section and the wider combustion engines group. Below you will find the models split by fuel and output, the four measurements that decide whether an engine fits your machine, and what routine servicing looks like on site.
Rato engines — petrol and diesel
Rato builds single-cylinder air-cooled engines in two fuel versions: OHV petrol units for equipment that runs in bursts, and diesels marked with a D (RV…D) for continuous duty. The number in the designation corresponds roughly to displacement, so an R390 is an engine of around 390 cm³.
| Model | Fuel | Output | Typical application |
|---|---|---|---|
| R210 | petrol | 5.7 HP | light vibratory plates, small water pumps, mixers |
| R300 | petrol | 8 HP | forward-travel plates, water pumps |
| R390 | petrol | 10 HP | reversible plates, walk-behind floor saws |
| R420 | petrol | 12 HP | reversible plates, single-phase generators |
| RV340D | diesel | 10 HP | equipment under constant load |
| RV450D | diesel | 14 HP | generator sets, heavier machines |
| RV740D | diesel | 24 HP | higher-output generators, continuous duty |
Matching a Rato engine to your machine
Four figures decide whether the swap works; the model name alone tells you little.
- Output — stay within roughly 10% of the original rating. An underpowered unit bogs down under load, an overpowered one strains the clutch and frame.
- Shaft diameter and length — up to about 6 HP usually 19.05 mm, above that most often 25.4 mm; those 6 mm mean a new clutch or pulley. The same model is often built in several shaft versions, so measure the shaft in the machine first.
- Mounting hole pattern — near-identical across the small engine standard, but worth measuring on a shop-built frame.
- Drive take-off type — a plain shaft with keyway, a tapered shaft, or a version with reduction gearbox.
For complete machines rather than power units, see our single-direction vibratory plates and generators.
Running and servicing a Rato engine
The first oil change falls after about 20 running hours, later ones every 100. Clean the air filter roughly every 25 hours, and check it daily when the machine is cutting concrete or compacting aggregate. Service parts sit under filters for combustion engines.
Frequently asked questions about Rato engines
What is a Rato engine and what equipment does it fit?
Rato builds single-cylinder air-cooled combustion engines to the dimensional standard of small construction machinery. The NORWIT.PL range covers OHV petrol units from 5.7 HP (R210) to 12 HP (R420) and diesels from 10 HP (RV340D) to 24 HP (RV740D). They turn up in vibratory plates, generator sets, water pumps and floor saws — either as the power unit on new equipment or as a replacement for a high-hour engine.
Which Rato engine will replace the worn unit in my machine?
Selection follows output and shaft geometry rather than the model designation. Keep the new rating within roughly 10% of the original: a 5.5 HP engine takes a unit of about 5.7 HP, a 13 HP engine one in the 12–14 HP band. Next comes the shaft — around 19.05 mm in the class up to 6 HP, most often 25.4 mm above it — plus shaft length, keyway and the mounting hole pattern in the base.
Should I choose a petrol or a diesel Rato engine?
The fuel follows the duty cycle of the machine. Petrol units R210, R300, R390 and R420, rated 5.7 to 12 HP, are lighter and cheaper to buy, which suits equipment used in bursts — plates, water pumps and mixers. The diesels marked with a D (RV340D, RV450D, RV740D, rated 10 to 24 HP) deliver more torque and burn less fuel under continuous load, so they go into generator sets and machines running for hours at a time.
How often does a Rato engine need servicing on site?
Maintenance is counted in running hours, not calendar months. The first oil change is due after about 20 hours, later ones every 100 hours or once per season. The air filter is cleaned roughly every 25 hours and inspected daily in dusty conditions. On petrol units the spark plug is checked around every 100 hours and the fuel is 95-octane unleaded, stored a few weeks at most; on diesel units the fuel filter takes its place.
