A tractor power generator (also called a PTO generator or power take-off generator) is a generating set with no engine of its own — the alternator is driven by the tractor through its power take-off shaft. The unit hangs on the three-point linkage, connects to the PTO with a telescopic drive shaft and runs at one of the standardised speeds, 540 or 1000 rpm. A step-up gearbox converts that into the 3000 rpm the alternator needs to deliver 50 Hz at the 230 V and 400 V sockets.
The design pays off wherever a tractor is already standing on site: on farms as backup power for milking parlours, milk coolers, grain dryers and water pumps during an outage, and on pipeline or forestry work far from the grid. At NORWIT.PL this segment is built mainly around Fogo machines from the AGROVOLT AV line. If you need a set that runs on its own engine, look at three-phase 400 V generators or emergency power generators.
How a PTO generator turns tractor revolutions into 50 Hz
The power take-off shaft runs at two standardised speeds: 540 rpm, typical of tractors up to 100 hp, and 1000 rpm. A two-pole alternator needs 3000 rpm to produce 50 Hz, and the step-up gearbox inside the housing bridges that gap, so every model is factory-matched to one PTO speed.
Output frequency follows tractor revolutions directly: a 5% drop in speed pulls it to roughly 47.5 Hz, outside the tolerance of electric motors. Engine speed is set once and held with the hand throttle, while an AVR regulator keeps 230/400 V steady, usually within ±5%.
Sizing the set: how many kVA and which tractor
Generator output is rated in kVA while loads count in kW — at a typical power factor of 0.8 an 18 kVA set leaves about 14.4 kW of real power. Tractor power works the other way round: allow roughly 1.5–2 hp per 1 kVA, plus a margin for gearbox losses.
| Generator output | Real power (pf 0.8) | Tractor needed | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10–12 kVA | approx. 8–9.6 kW | from approx. 15–25 hp | lighting, water pumps, milking unit |
| 18–22 kVA | approx. 14.4–17.6 kW | from approx. 27–45 hp | milk cooler, milking parlour, barn ventilation |
| 27–40 kVA | approx. 21.6–32 kW | from approx. 40–80 hp | grain dryer, feed grinder, pipeline site |
Add a reserve of 20–30% on top for the inrush current of induction motors. Generating sets are classified by the EN ISO 8528 standard; field enclosures usually carry IP23 protection.
PTO generator versus a set with its own engine
| Criterion | PTO generator | Engine-driven generator |
|---|---|---|
| Source of drive | tractor power take-off shaft | built-in petrol or diesel engine |
| Engine servicing | none — the tractor is serviced instead | oil, filters, spark plugs, starter |
| Unattended operation | no — a running tractor is required | yes, on versions with automatics |
| Cost per kVA above 20 kVA | low | markedly higher |
It comes down to one question: whether a working tractor is available where the outage happens. If it is, the same output costs distinctly less than a set with its own engine, and this segment is covered here by Fogo machines from the AGROVOLT AV line. Where power has to restore itself, look at emergency power generators; the matching gear sits in power generator accessories.
Tractor power generators — common questions
How powerful a tractor does a PTO generator need?
Tractor power is matched by a rule of thumb of roughly 1.5–2 hp per 1 kVA of generator output. An 18 kVA unit therefore calls for about 27–36 hp, a 27 kVA unit for about 41–54 hp, and headroom matters because the tractor has to hold PTO speed constant under full load. The second condition is shaft speed: a generator built for 540 rpm must never be driven at 1000 rpm. The third is the lifting capacity of the three-point linkage, since units above 20 kVA weigh several hundred kilograms.
How does a PTO generator differ from one with its own engine?
The difference lies in the source of drive and in running costs. A tractor generator is an alternator, a gearbox and a control panel, so at 18 kVA it weighs distinctly less than an engine-driven set of the same rating and costs a fraction of the price. There are no oil or filter changes, and no fuel ageing in a tank through 6–12 months of standstill. The trade-off is dependence: without a running tractor the machine does nothing, and it cannot be wired into an automatic transfer switch.
How should PTO speed be set to hold 50 Hz?
Output frequency is a direct function of shaft speed, so revolutions are set before any load is connected and locked with the hand throttle. On a 540 rpm shaft the gearbox spins the alternator to 3000 rpm, which gives 50 Hz; a deviation of 5% downwards already means about 47.5 Hz and overheated electric motors. The frequency meter on the generator panel is the reference — if the reading drops below 49 Hz under load, raise engine speed or shed part of the load.
What can an 18 kVA tractor generator run?
An 18 kVA set delivers about 14.4 kW of real power at a power factor of 0.8, enough on a farm for a milking parlour, a milk cooler, barn ventilation and water pumps at once. The limiting factor is not total consumption but inrush current: induction motors draw 3–7 times rated current at start-up, so the largest load is always started first. Connecting to a building installation requires a changeover switch isolating the mains, fitted by a qualified electrician.
