A vibrator motor — the electric drive unit of an internal concrete vibrator — is the power source of a poker set: an enclosed single-phase motor running on 230 V / 50 Hz, rated in most cases at 1.1–2.3 kW. Through a quick-release coupling it passes roughly 3 000 rpm to a flexible shaft, which in turn drives the poker at some 12 000–14 000 vibrations per minute. Buying the drive on its own makes sense in two situations: when a worn unit has to be replaced, or when one motor is meant to serve several pokers of different diameters.
NORWIT.PL stocks drive units mainly from Wacker Neuson, Enar and Altrad Belle. Units of this type are built either hand-carried or as backpack versions, for work on slabs and inside dense reinforcement. A motor is always specified together with a vibrator poker and a shaft; if a ready-to-run machine is the better answer, look at the complete 230 V mechanical vibrator sets or browse the Wacker Neuson range. Below we explain how to match drive power to poker diameter and shaft length.
Matching a vibrator motor to poker diameter
Drive power follows from how much concrete the poker has to set in motion. A larger poker and a longer flexible shaft both increase torsional losses, so the motor behind them has to be stronger. Working outside the maker's range overheats the windings and pulls the frequency below the level at which compaction still works.
| Poker diameter | Typical drive power | Recommended shaft length | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25–35 mm | approx. 1.1–1.5 kW | 1.5–3 m | ring beams, columns, dense reinforcement |
| 38–45 mm | approx. 1.5–2.0 kW | 3–4 m | floor slabs, strip footings and walls |
| 50–65 mm | approx. 2.0–2.3 kW | 4–6 m | raft foundations, industrial floors |
Above 4 m of shaft it pays to build in a power reserve — every extra metre costs a few per cent of torque to friction. Backpack-carried units of some 5–8 kg ease work inside reinforcement cages; hand-carried ones suit pours run from one spot.
Mechanical 230 V drives compared with other systems
Motors in this category are mechanical drives: vibration is generated inside the poker, and the 230 V unit only rotates the shaft. That is a different design from a poker with a built-in converter or a 42 V / 200 Hz set, where the motor sits in the poker itself.
| System | Power supply | Poker replaceable on its own | Where it works best |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical drive with flexible shaft | 230 V / 50 Hz | yes, once the shaft is unscrewed | small and medium pours, one 230 V socket |
| Poker with built-in converter | 230 V / 200 Hz | no, the poker is integral | maintenance jobs and mobile work |
| High-frequency set | 42 V / 200 Hz from a converter | yes, within the maker's system | continuous work, large volumes |
| Petrol-engine drive | petrol | yes | sites without mains power, road works |
If the job calls for a finished machine rather than a bare drive, go to 230 V mechanical vibrators or 42 V / 200 Hz vibrators. A separate group are drives for vibratory screeds, which are not interchangeable with poker units: mounting and speed range differ. Units from Enar and Altrad Belle run on their own coupling systems, so accessories are best kept within one brand.
Questions and answers
What motor power suits a 45 mm poker?
Pokers of 38–45 mm call for a drive rated 1.5–2.0 kW on a 230 V / 50 Hz supply with a 3–4 m shaft. Such a set holds around 12 000 vibrations per minute even in a stiff mix of S2–S3 consistency. A 1.1 kW motor handles the same diameter only with a short shaft up to 2 m and intermittent work — with a longer casing the torque falls away and compaction stops being effective.
Can a 230 V vibrator motor run off a portable generator?
Generator supply is standard on sites without mains power, as long as the set is sized with a margin. A single-phase 1.1–2.3 kW motor draws several times its rated current at start-up, so a safe generator is rated about twice the drive — roughly 4–5 kVA for a 2.0 kW unit. A mechanical drive is a plain induction motor, so it copes with voltage swings better than converter electronics do. Power sources are grouped under single-phase 230 V generators.
What should be checked when buying a replacement drive?
Three figures settle a replacement: coupling type between motor and shaft, casing thread and permissible torque. Makers use their own quick-release systems, so the drive, the 1–6 m shaft and the 25–65 mm poker are usually kept within one brand. Power comes on top of that: a new drive is matched to the largest poker in the set, not to the one used most often. An adapter fitted without those checks usually snaps the shaft core.
What most often destroys a concrete vibrator motor?
Overheated windings caused by an undersized extension lead are the most common failure. A 1.5 mm² cable running 50 m can pull the voltage down by well over ten per cent, so a 2.0 kW motor draws more current and runs hotter. The second classic mistake is running a grit-filled shaft without grease, which loads bearings and coupling. A safe routine is at least 2.5 mm² of conductor beyond 25 m of lead, greasing the shaft after each day of pouring, and a cooling break after about an hour of continuous work.
