Concrete equipment covers the machines used to compact, level and finish fresh concrete. Freshly placed concrete holds 5–20% of entrapped air that has to be removed — every 1% of trapped air lowers compressive strength by roughly 5–6%. The air is driven out by vibrators: internal (a poker immersed in the mix) and external (bolted to the formwork). A vibrating screed strikes off the surface of slabs, and once the concrete has stiffened a power trowel smooths it. The result is dense, load-bearing foundations, walls, columns and floor slabs.
The NORWIT.PL concreting department lists professional machines from leading manufacturers, led by Enar alongside Wacker Neuson and Altrad Belle. We split the range into five groups: concrete vibrators and external vibrators for compaction, vibrating screeds for slabs, concrete troweling equipment, and concreting tools with frequency converters. Below we explain which machine handles each stage of concreting and how to match the poker diameter to the element.
Concrete equipment — how fresh concrete is compacted and finished
Concreting (placing, compacting and finishing the concrete mix) relies on three groups of equipment: for compaction deep inside the element, for levelling the surface, and for smoothing it once the concrete has set. Straight after pouring, the fresh mix contains 5–20% of entrapped air that has to be removed — every 1% of trapped air lowers the compressive strength of concrete by about 5–6%. The air is driven out by vibrators: internal (a poker, i.e. a vibrating head immersed in the mix) and external (bolted to the formwork). The surface of slabs is struck off with a vibrating screed and, after initial set, smoothed with a power trowel.
The NORWIT.PL concreting department lists professional machines from leading manufacturers. The leading brand in the department is Enar, followed by Wacker Neuson and Altrad Belle. We organise the range into five groups: concrete vibrators, external vibrators, vibrating screeds, concrete troweling equipment and concreting tools. Below we explain which machine handles each stage of concreting and how to match it to the element.
Types of concrete equipment — from compaction to finishing
The choice of equipment is driven by the stage of the work and the geometry of the element. Massive elements are compacted with internal vibrators, and where the poker will not fit — in precast units and thin-walled, densely reinforced elements — external vibrators bolted to the mould are used. The surface of slabs is compacted and levelled in a single pass by a vibrating screed, and after initial set the concrete is smoothed by concrete troweling equipment. The work is rounded out by concreting tools: floats, straightedges, frequency converters and small accessories.
| Equipment type | Concreting stage | What it is for | Brands in the range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal vibrators (pokers) | deep compaction | elements thicker than 15 cm: foundations, footings, walls, columns, floors | Enar, Wacker Neuson |
| External vibrators | compaction through the mould | formwork, precast units, thin-walled and densely reinforced elements | Wacker Neuson, Husqvarna Construction |
| Vibrating screeds | compaction + levelling | slabs and floors up to about 15–20 cm thick | Enar, Husqvarna Construction |
| Concrete troweling | surface finishing | smoothing and hardening a set floor | Enar, Norton Clipper |
| Concreting tools | ancillary and power supply | floats, straightedges, frequency converters, small accessories | Beton Trowel, Enar |
High-frequency vibrators with the motor built into the poker need a high-frequency power supply. It is provided by frequency converters such as the Enar BOXEL 215, 225 and 325, or the Husqvarna CF25M (230 V) and CF25T (400 V), which convert the 50 Hz mains supply to around 200 Hz and protect the motor against overload.
Which equipment for which concreting stage
Correct concreting is a sequence of four stages, and each one is served by a different machine. Skipping compaction or troweling too early lowers the quality and durability of the element, which is why the equipment is chosen to match the order of the work.
| Stage | Task | Equipment type |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pouring and spreading | distributing the mix, initial levelling | concreting tools (floats, screeding straightedges) |
| 2. Deep compaction | removing air from the full cross-section | internal vibrator (poker) or external vibrator |
| 3. Striking off the slab | compacting and levelling the top layer | vibrating screed |
| 4. Troweling | smoothing and hardening the surface | power trowel (concrete troweling department) |
Choosing an internal vibrator — poker diameter to element
The poker diameter is matched to the bar spacing and the volume of concrete. The effective radius of action of a poker is roughly 8–10 times its diameter, so the head is immersed at spacings smaller than twice that radius, usually every 30–50 cm, for 5–15 seconds, held vertically and withdrawn slowly.
| Element / thickness | Recommended poker diameter | Radius of action (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Columns, ring beams, thin and densely reinforced elements | 25–38 mm | approx. 25–40 cm | a slim head slips between the bars |
| Walls, floors, slabs over 15 cm | 40–50 mm | approx. 40–50 cm | the all-round choice for most work |
| Footings and massive foundations | 50–65 mm | approx. 50–70 cm | large volumes, continuous work |
| Elements a poker cannot reach | – | – | an external vibrator on the formwork is used |
Vibrators are also grouped by drive: high-frequency models (12,000–18,000 vibrations per minute) with the motor in the poker compact the most strongly but need a converter, while flexible-shaft versions are driven by an electric or petrol motor. Battery solutions, such as the Enar TORNADO E-BATT (22.2 V, 14.5 Ah), do away with the cable and converter on small and medium jobs.
Matching equipment to the scale of the job
The scale of the structure decides whether one machine is enough or a full set is needed. For the foundations of a single-family house a 40–50 mm flexible-shaft poker is sufficient; for an industrial floor you combine a poker, a vibrating screed and a power trowel working in turn; and precast crews reach for external vibrators fixed to the formwork. Choosing the right heads, shafts and converters is made easier by concreting tools, while the full range of concrete equipment is offered by the brand Enar.
Frequently asked questions about concrete equipment
How do you choose concrete compaction equipment — an internal vibrator (poker), an external vibrator or a vibrating screed?
The choice is decided by the geometry of the element. An internal vibrator (a 25–65 mm poker) is immersed in the mix and suits elements thicker than 15 cm — foundations, footings, walls and columns. An external vibrator is bolted to the formwork and compacts through the wall of the mould, so it fits precast units and thin-walled, densely reinforced elements. A vibrating screed compacts and levels slabs and floors up to about 15–20 cm thick at the same time, using a 2–4 m beam.
What is the difference between an internal concrete vibrator and an external vibrator, and when should you use each?
An internal vibrator works from inside the mix: a poker 25–65 mm in diameter is immersed every 30–50 cm for 5–15 seconds, and the vibrations (12,000–18,000 per minute) drive air out of the cross-section. An external vibrator is bolted to the formwork and transmits the vibrations through the wall of the mould. A poker is used for massive elements accessible from above; an external vibrator suits thin, heavily reinforced or precast elements where the head cannot be inserted.
When do you use a vibrating screed and when a power trowel to finish a floor slab?
A vibrating screed and a power trowel work at two different stages. The screed is run over the fresh mix immediately after it is spread — a 2–4 m beam compacts the top layer and strikes the slab off to level. A power trowel (a machine with rotating blades or a 600–1,200 mm disc) is only started after initial set, when a foot leaves a mark of about 3–5 mm; it smooths and hardens the surface. The order is fixed: screed, set, then troweling. For levelling choose vibrating screeds, and for finishing the concrete troweling range.
Which concrete vibrator should you choose for foundations, and which for a thin slab or a column?
For massive foundations and footings the best choice is a 50–65 mm poker with a large radius of action (up to 50–70 cm), which quickly compacts big volumes. For columns and walls a 40–50 mm poker works well, and for dense reinforcement and thin elements a slim 25–38 mm head. A thin slab up to about 15–20 cm is compacted mainly with a vibrating screed, assisted by a 25 mm poker along the edges. In thin-walled and precast elements where a poker will not fit, external vibrators fixed to the mould are used.
How do you match the poker (vibrator head) diameter to the thickness and reinforcement of the element?
The poker diameter is matched to the bar spacing and the volume of concrete. Heads of 25–38 mm slip between closely spaced bars and suit columns, ring beams and thin elements; 40–50 mm pokers are the all-round choice for walls and floors; 50–65 mm is reserved for footings and massive foundations. A poker that is too large will not reach the bottom in dense reinforcement — in that case an external vibrator performs better.
Is it worth vibrating concrete, and what does vibrating the mix achieve?
Vibrating removes air bubbles from the mix that can make up 5–20% of the volume in uncompacted concrete. Every 1% of trapped air lowers compressive strength by about 5–6%, so compaction genuinely increases the load-bearing capacity and density of the element. Vibrating eliminates honeycombing and voids and improves the bond between concrete and reinforcement. Standard EN 206 requires the mix to be fully compacted. Over-vibrating that causes aggregate segregation is just as harmful as under-vibrating, which is why the vibration time at a single point is limited to a few to a dozen or so seconds.
What can replace a concrete vibrator — can you compact concrete well without a poker?
The alternative to a poker is other mechanical methods, not giving up compaction. Slabs and floors up to about 15–20 cm thick are effectively compacted by a vibrating screed; thin-walled elements and precast units by an external vibrator bolted to the formwork; and self-compacting concrete (SCC) flows without vibration thanks to admixtures. Manual rodding with a bar only works for very small volumes. For typical structural elements a 25–65 mm poker remains the most effective, and under-compacted concrete can lose as much as 30% of its strength.
What is a frequency converter (e.g. Enar BOXEL, Husqvarna CF25) used for with high-frequency vibrators?
A frequency converter turns the standard 50 Hz mains supply into a high-frequency current of around 200 Hz, which high-frequency vibrators with the motor built into the poker require. Without it, such heads will not reach the full 12,000 vibrations per minute or full compaction power. Models from the range, such as the Enar BOXEL 215, 225 and 325 or the Husqvarna CF25M (230 V) and CF25T (400 V), power one or several pokers at once and protect the motor against overload. The choice depends on the number of pokers and the supply — single-phase 230 V or three-phase 400 V.
How much does a concrete vibrator cost, and how much a power trowel?
Prices depend on the type and output of the equipment. Light electric pokers start on the market at a few hundred euros, while complete high-frequency vibrators with a converter cost from around €500 to a dozen or so thousand euros. Single-disc walk-behind power trowels usually fall in the range of a few to a dozen or so thousand euros, and ride-on twin-rotor machines cost tens of thousands. We give the current prices of all items in the department on the individual product pages, and orders are fulfilled online.
