Description

Barikell HGS diamond segments (soft concrete) — Quick Lock tool for grinding soft concrete (3–5 Mohs)

The HGS diamond segment is a metal-bond grinding tool from the Barikell / HG Hyper Grinder system: a plate with Quick Lock attachment and two diamond segments measuring 10 × 40 × 10 mm, designed for soft concrete — hardness 3–5 on the Mohs scale. Available grits: 20, 40, 70 i 140; the price is per segment and a planetary head takes a set (usually 3 per plate). The HGS bond is a harder bond that does not wear too fast in soft, abrasive concrete.

Which concrete and why the bond matters

In a diamond segment the bond wears away and exposes new diamonds. On soft concrete you need a harder bond that does not wear too fast in soft, abrasive concrete. If the concrete is harder than the series assumes, the segment glazes over and stops cutting; if softer, it wears out in a few hours. If unsure, start with HGM for medium concrete and watch the wear after the first 50 m²; the alternative is HGH for hard concrete.

Grits and working order

Grits 20, 40, 70 i 140 correspond to successive stages: the coarsest strips laitance, unevenness and adhesive residue, the middle ones remove the scratches of the previous grit, the finest prepares the surface for densifier and resin pads. Run each grit until the previous scratches disappear, overlapping passes by about 30 percent; skipping a grit leaves scratches that only show after polishing.

Quick Lock mounting and machines

The plate has curved Quick Lock tabs — the segment slides into the plate socket without tools and comes out in one movement, so changing a full set on three heads takes minutes. It fits Barikell BKG grinders with Quick Lock plates, including the BKG 450 E DTC planetary grinder and BKG550-VS, and other machines with the same socket. For the single-disc BKGM 280 and edge grinders choose the version matching the plate diameter.

Dry or wet, service life

Metal segments work dry with an industrial vacuum with HEPA filter or wet with the machine's water system — water cools the segment and binds dust but the slurry must be collected. A worn segment shows a diamond layer below about 2 mm or a clear drop in output. Replace segments as a full set on the whole head so the plate runs true.

HGS segments — available at NORWIT.PL

The segments come from Barikell (HG Hyper Grinder system); the article number of each grit is shown in the Index field once a variant is selected. After metal grinding move on to Jumpy Ø 75 mm polishing discs fitted to the hook-and-loop holder plate, and apply Concrete Hardener Lithium between stages. Full range: diamond segments and pads, planetary concrete grinders; the whole process is described in concrete grinding and polishing — what is worth knowing.

Questions and answers

How do I match a diamond segment to concrete hardness?

Choose the segment inversely to concrete hardness: soft, abrasive concrete (3–5 Mohs) takes the HGS series with a harder bond, medium (5–7) HGM, hard (7–8) HGH with a softer bond, and extremely hard concrete HGX with the softest. Hard concrete does not wear the bond, so the bond must release the diamonds itself; soft concrete wears it fast, so the bond must be hard. If the hardness is unknown, start with HGM and check the wear after the first 50 m².

What do grits 20, 40, 70 and 140 mean?

Grit is the diamond grain size: the lower the number, the coarser the grain and the more aggressive the cut. Grit 20 strips laitance, adhesives and unevenness, 40 removes the scratches of 20, 70 smooths and 140 prepares the surface for densifier and resin discs. Run each grit until the previous scratches disappear, overlapping passes by about 30 percent. Skipping a grit leaves scratches that only show after polishing.

What is Quick Lock mounting?

Quick Lock is a tool-free mounting system for diamond tools on the plates of Barikell BKG and HG Hyper Grinder machines: the segment plate has curved tabs that slide into the plate socket and lock with the machine's rotation. Changing a full set on three heads takes minutes instead of unscrewing bolts. The same socket takes a hook-and-loop adapter plate that accepts Ø 75 mm polishing discs.

How many segments does a grinder need?

Each plate of a planetary head usually takes three segments spaced 120 degrees apart, so a three-head BKG grinder needs nine segments of one grit; for levelling a very uneven floor two segments per plate are fitted, which raises the unit pressure. Replace segments as a set on the whole machine, because mixing new and worn ones makes the plates run unevenly and the floor wavy. The shop price is per piece.

Grind dry or wet?

Metal segments work in both modes. Wet, water from the machine's system cools the segment, binds dust and extends tool life, but it produces slurry that must be collected as you go and the floor dried before chemicals. Dry work needs an industrial vacuum with a HEPA filter, is logistically cleaner and moves on to polishing sooner. On hard concrete a dry segment glazes faster — adding water or switching to a softer bond helps.

When is a segment worn out?

Replace a segment when the diamond layer is below about 2 mm high or when output clearly drops despite a correct bond choice. Wear should be even on all segments of a plate; if one wears faster, check the head pressure and plate flatness. A segment that has stopped cutting but is not worn has usually glazed — open it up with a few passes over an abrasive surface or switch to a softer bond.
