Description

Nivel System CLx3G crossline laser – green 3×360° beam with a centring adapter

A crossline (line) laser projects lines onto walls, ceiling and floor that replace a spirit level, plumb bob and chalk line. The Nivel System CLx3G is a self-levelling 3×360° laser with a green 515 nm beam: ±2.0 mm accuracy at 10 m, 30 m working range extended to 70 m with a sensor, a ±3.0° compensator, an 8000 mAh battery, Bluetooth control and an IP54 housing. The manufacturer designs it for suspended ceilings, tiling, installation and construction work.

3 planes of 360° – a 3D laser

A 3×360° laser (also called a 3D laser) projects 1 horizontal and 2 vertical planes, each a full 360° around. The horizontal plane comes from the top head, so the line runs along every wall of the room at once. The two vertical planes cross at a right angle on the ceiling and floor, so a single set-up gives you plumb, level and a 90° angle. The LASER button cycles through H, V1, V1+V2 and V1+V2+H. Accuracy is ±2.0 mm at 10 m.

Green 515 nm beam for bright interiors

The CLx3G projects a class 2 green beam with a wavelength of 515 nm. The human eye is about 3 times more sensitive to this colour than to 638 nm red, so the green line stays clear in daylight and under strong work lighting. The same laser with a red beam is the CLx3R, with an identical measuring specification. In full sun and outdoors the line is read with a sensor.

Centring adapter – set the direction without moving the laser

The hallmark of the CLx3 series is the AD-CL centring adapter, held to the laser by magnets. You place the laser so that the crossing point of the vertical planes sits over the starting point of the axis, then turn the side knobs to rotate it left or right by up to 5°. The crossing point of the beams does not move, which used to make setting a direction awkward with 360° multi-plane lasers. The rear knob moves the laser forwards and backwards, and the adapter base has 1/4″ and 5/8″ threads for any tripod.

±3.0° compensator and slope mode

The magnetic compensator self-levels the lines within ±3.0°, even on an unstable base. When the laser stands too far off level the lines flash and it has to be set straighter. To mark lines at an angle, for example stairs or attic slopes, hold the LASER button for 3 s with the power switch off: the pendulum is locked and the line blinks every 5 s as a reminder that self-levelling is disabled. Always transport the laser with the compensator locked.

30 m range, 70 m with a sensor

The line is visible to the naked eye up to about 30 m. With pulse mode switched on (PULSE button) the laser works with a 10 kHz sensor and the range grows to 70 m, outdoors too. The manual lists the manual CLS-5 sensor and the digital RD800 DIGITAL, which NORWIT.PL has replaced with the CLS-300 DIGITAL showing the deviation in millimetres. In pulse mode the line is slightly dimmer, which is normal.

8000 mAh battery, USB-C and Bluetooth

The 3.7 V / 8000 mAh Li-ion battery charges through a USB-C socket in about 4 hours, also while the laser is running, and has no memory effect. The same pack powers the CL4 LCD and CL5 lasers and the NL 300 and NL 320 levels, so a spare Aku CL 8000 battery serves the whole family. Over Bluetooth the laser connects to the Nivel CL app for Android and iOS, where you switch planes and modes. The IP54 housing with metal head guards protects against dust and water splashes.

What is in the case

The transport case holds the laser, a laser target plate, a CL-BR multi-adapter, an AD-CL centring adapter, an Aku CL 8000 battery and a CH-CL charger with a USB-C cable. With the adapter the laser weighs 0.84 kg (0.63 kg without it) and measures 150 × 110 × 163 mm. Glasses are not included; with a green beam GL-G glasses are useful. The manufacturer gives a 12-month warranty and extends it free of charge to 24 months if the laser is registered within 3 months of purchase.

CLx3G or CL4G LCD – 3 or 4 planes

The CLx3G has 3 planes of 360° (1 horizontal and 2 vertical) and a centring adapter for setting the direction of an axis precisely. The CL4G LCD has 4 planes of 360° (2 horizontal and 2 vertical) and an LCD display, but no centring adapter. Both have a green 515 nm beam, ±2.0 mm accuracy at 10 m, a 70 m range with a sensor and an 8000 mAh battery. For suspended ceilings, drywall and tiling the 3 planes of the CLx3G are enough.

Questions and answers

Which 360° crossline laser should I choose: 3×360° or 4×360°?

A 3×360° crossline laser such as the Nivel System CLx3G projects 1 horizontal and 2 vertical planes, which is enough for suspended ceilings, drywall partitions, tiling and marking out installations. A 4×360° laser such as the CL4G LCD adds a second horizontal plane and an LCD display. In the Nivel System range both types have the same ±2.0 mm accuracy at 10 m, a 30 m range (70 m with a sensor) and an 8000 mAh battery. The CLx3G stands out with a centring adapter that turns the laser by up to 5° without moving the crossing point of the vertical lines.

Which crossline laser should I choose: green or red?

A green crossline laser such as the CLx3G with a 515 nm beam is easier to see in bright rooms, because the human eye is about 3 times more sensitive to green than to 638 nm red. The red CLx3R is enough in moderately lit rooms and when working after dark. Both have the same specification: 3 planes of 360°, ±2.0 mm accuracy at 10 m and a 30 m working range, extended to 70 m with a sensor, where the beam colour no longer matters.

What is the centring adapter on the CLx3G for?

The AD-CL centring adapter is used to set the direction of the vertical planes precisely without moving the laser. The laser is placed so that the crossing point of the two vertical lines sits over the starting point of the axis, and the knobs on the sides of the adapter turn it left or right by up to 5°. The crossing point of the beams stays where it is. The rear knob moves the laser forwards and backwards. The adapter is held by magnets, can be detached and has 1/4″ and 5/8″ threads in its base for a tripod.

What range does the CLx3G have and which sensor does it work with?

The CLx3G has a 30 m range for a line visible to the naked eye and 70 m with a sensor. With pulse mode switched on (PULSE button) it works with 10 kHz sensors: the manual CLS-5 and the digital CLS-300 DIGITAL, which shows the deviation in millimetres. The sensor lets you work outdoors and in full sun, where the line cannot be seen with the naked eye. In pulse mode the line is slightly dimmer, which is normal and not a fault.

Is a green crossline laser harmful to the eyes?

The green CLx3G crossline laser is class 2, which means a visible beam of up to 1 mW. If you glance into it by accident, the eye is protected by the blink reflex, which takes about 0.25 s. The manufacturer nevertheless forbids aiming the beam at the eyes or at highly reflective surfaces. Keep the laser out of reach of children. For long work in bright interiors, GL-G laser glasses improve the contrast of the green line.

How do I use the CLx3G on a slope?

The CLx3G works on a slope thanks to the compensator lock. With the power switch off, hold the LASER button for 3 seconds: the LED by the button lights up, the pendulum is locked and the line blinks every 5 seconds as a reminder that self-levelling is disabled. The laser can then be tilted at any angle, for example to mark out stairs or attic slopes. Further presses of the LASER button add the vertical planes V1 and V2. In normal mode the compensator levels the lines within ±3.0°.

How long does the CLx3G battery take to charge, and does the laser work while charging?

The 3.7 V 8000 mAh Aku CL 8000 Li-ion battery charges fully in about 4 hours through a USB-C socket, and the CH-CL charger with its cable is in the case. The laser keeps working while charging, so a flat battery does not stop the job. The charge level is shown by an LED indicator when you press the button on the back of the battery. The same pack fits the CL4 LCD and CL5 lasers and the NL 300 and NL 320 levels, and a spare battery can be bought separately.

What is in the CLx3G case?

The Nivel System CLx3G case contains the laser, a laser target plate, a CL-BR multi-adapter, an AD-CL centring adapter, an Aku CL 8000 battery (3.7 V, 8000 mAh), a CH-CL charger with a USB-C cable and the user manual. Glasses are not included. With the adapter the laser weighs 0.84 kg and measures 150 × 110 × 163 mm. The manufacturer's warranty is 12 months and is extended free of charge to 24 months if the laser is registered within 3 months of purchase.
