Description
Nivel System CL4G LCD crossline laser – green 4×360° beam with an LCD display
A crossline (line) laser projects lines onto walls, ceiling and floor that replace a spirit level, plumb bob and chalk line. The Nivel System CL4G LCD is a self-levelling 4×360° laser with a green 515 nm beam: ±2.0 mm accuracy at 10 m, 30 m working range extended to 70 m with a sensor, a ±3.0° compensator, an 8000 mAh battery and an LCD display on top of the housing. The manufacturer designs it for drywall, suspended ceilings, partition walls, tiling and interior finishing.
What is new in the CL4 LCD series
Compared with the previous CL4, five things have changed. The top of the housing carries an LCD display showing the active planes, battery level and out-of-level status. Battery capacity has grown from 4000 to 8000 mAh. The laser gives an audible warning when it is outside the ±3.0° compensator range. A violet-beam CL4V LCD has joined the series. The glasses are no longer in the case, which now has room for an optional sensor with a bracket.
Green 515 nm beam for bright interiors
The CL4G LCD projects a green beam with a wavelength of 515 nm. The human eye is about 3 times more sensitive to this colour than to 638 nm red, so the green line stays clear in daylight and under strong work lighting. It is a good choice for suspended ceilings, drywall partitions and tiling in bright, glazed interiors. In full sun and outdoors the line is read with a sensor, which picks up all four colours of the series.
4 planes of 360° and beam selection
A 4×360° crossline laser (also called a 4D laser) projects 2 horizontal and 2 vertical planes, each a full 360° around. The LASER button cycles through H1, V1, V1+V2, H1+V1+V2, H2+V1+V2 and all four together. The two vertical planes cross at a right angle on the ceiling and floor, so a single set-up gives you plumb, level and a 90° angle across the whole room. Accuracy is ±2.0 mm at 10 m.
±3.0° compensator and slope mode
The magnetic compensator self-levels the lines within ±3.0°. When the laser stands too far off level, all active planes flash quickly and a beeper sounds. To mark lines at an angle, for example stairs or attic slopes, hold the LASER button for about 3 s with the power switch off: the pendulum is locked and the line blinks every 6–7 s as a reminder that self-levelling is disabled. Always transport the laser with the compensator locked.
30 m range, 70 m with a sensor
The line is visible to the naked eye up to about 30 m. With pulse mode switched on (PULSE button) the laser works with a 10 kHz sensor and the range grows to 70 m, even in sunlight. The manufacturer specifies two sensors that pick up all four colours: the manual CLS-5 and the digital CLS-300 DIGITAL. Keep the sensor at least 2 m from the laser, or 4 m in difficult conditions, so it does not react to beam afterglow.
8000 mAh battery, USB-C, app
The 3.7 V / 8000 mAh Li-ion battery charges through a USB-C socket in about 4 hours, also while the laser is running, and doubles as a power bank for a phone. The laser connects over Bluetooth to the NIVEL CL app for Android and iOS, where you switch planes and modes. The IP54 housing protects against dust and water splashes, and the operating temperature range is -10 °C to +50 °C. The laser weighs 920 g, measures 148 × 90 × 151 mm and has 1/4″ and 5/8″ mounting sockets.
What is in the case
The transport case holds the laser, a TR-W target plate, two FTR-W floor targets, a CL-BR multi-adapter, an LF-1 laser lift for fine height adjustment, an Aku CL 8000 battery and a USB-C charger. Glasses are no longer included. With a green beam, GL-G glasses are useful. The manufacturer gives a 12-month warranty and extends it free of charge to 24 months if the laser is registered within 3 months of purchase.
Laser on its own or in a kit
If you already own a tripod and a sensor, the laser alone is enough. For suspended ceilings and drywall the kit with the LP-36 spreader pole is convenient, and for work at different heights the kit with the SJJ-M1 EX tripod. For large halls and outdoor work choose a kit with a tripod and a sensor: with the manual CLS-5 or with the digital CLS-300 DIGITAL.

Questions and answers
How does the Nivel System CL4G LCD differ from the previous CL4G?
The Nivel System CL4G LCD is a new version of the CL4G laser with five changes: an LCD display on top of the housing, an 8000 mAh battery instead of 4000 mAh, an audible warning outside the ±3.0° compensator range, a case without glasses that has room for a sensor, and a new colour in the series, the violet CL4V LCD. The measuring specification is unchanged: 4 planes of 360°, ±2.0 mm accuracy at 10 m and a 30 m range, extended to 70 m with a sensor.
Which crossline laser should I choose: green or red?
A green crossline laser such as the CL4G LCD with a 515 nm beam is easier to see in bright rooms, because the human eye is about 3 times more sensitive to green than to 638 nm red. The red CL4R LCD costs less and is enough in moderately lit rooms. Both have the same specification: 4 planes of 360°, ±2.0 mm accuracy at 10 m and a 30 m working range, extended to 70 m with a sensor, where the beam colour no longer matters.
What range does the CL4G LCD have and which sensor does it work with?
The CL4G LCD has a 30 m working range for a line visible to the naked eye and 70 m with a sensor. In pulse mode (PULSE button) it works with 10 kHz sensors: the manual CLS-5 with 1.0 mm accuracy and the digital CLS-300 DIGITAL with a millimetre readout in a 70 mm window. Both pick up red, green, blue and violet beams. The sensor must be at least 2 m from the laser.
How do I set up a 4×360° crossline laser and switch planes?
A 4×360° crossline laser is placed on the floor, a tripod or a pole, and the power switch is moved to ON, which unlocks the compensator and starts self-levelling within ±3.0°. After switching on, horizontal plane H1 lights up. Each press of the LASER button changes the layout in the order V1, V1+V2, H1+V1+V2, H2+V1+V2 and all four planes together. Planes can also be switched from the NIVEL CL app over Bluetooth.
What do the beeping and flashing laser lines mean?
Fast flashing of all planes together with a beep means the laser is tilted by more than 3.0° and the compensator cannot level the lines. Simply stand the laser straighter. Slow blinking every 6–7 seconds without a sound means slope mode: the compensator is locked and the lines can be tilted at any angle. This mode is enabled by holding the LASER button for about 3 seconds with the power switch off.
Can the CL4G LCD be used outdoors?
The CL4G LCD is suitable for outdoor work when used with a sensor. The housing is rated IP54, which means limited dust protection and protection against water splashes, and the operating temperature range is -10 °C to +50 °C. In full sun the line is hard to see with the naked eye, so in pulse mode it is read with a CLS-5 or CLS-300 DIGITAL sensor, which extends the range to 70 m.
How long does the 8000 mAh battery take to charge, and does the laser work while charging?
The 3.7 V 8000 mAh Li-ion battery charges fully in about 4 hours through a USB-C socket, and the charger is in the case. The laser keeps working while charging, so a flat battery does not stop the job. The charge level is shown on the LCD display and the LEDs on the battery. The battery also works as a power bank and can charge a phone.
What is in the CL4G LCD case, and are glasses included?
The CL4G LCD case contains the laser, a TR-W target plate, 2 FTR-W floor targets, a CL-BR multi-adapter, an LF-1 laser lift, an Aku CL 8000 battery and a USB-C charger. The new CL4 LCD series has no glasses; the space is used for a sensor with a bracket. With a green beam, GL-G glasses are useful. The warranty is 12 months, or 24 months if the laser is registered within 3 months of purchase.
