A concrete saw in walk-behind / self-propelled configuration (also called a floor saw or asphalt cutter) is a professional cart-mounted machine with a Honda GX petrol engine or 400V electric motor and a 350-1000 mm diamond blade. It cuts concrete, asphalt, paving stone and industrial floors up to 350 mm deep in a single pass — expansion joints, pavement removal for utility work, road construction.

Concrete saw vs asphalt saw — what's the difference?

Contrary to common belief, it's the same machine — what differs is the diamond blade selection:

Concrete blade — sintered diamond segments, soft metal bond. Cuts hard, abrasive material (rocky aggregate). Lifespan 200-400 m².
Asphalt blade — laser-welded segments, hard bond. Asphalt is soft but sticky — the bond must wear slowly to avoid clogging. Lifespan 300-600 m².
Green concrete blade (Soff-Cut) — special geometry, runs dry, no cooling water needed.

Bottom line: a single machine handles concrete, asphalt and paving stone — just swap the diamond blade matched to the material. Technology differences: an asphalt saw usually has a larger water tank (more intense cooling due to sticky debris), the rest of the construction is identical.

How does a walk-behind floor saw differ from a wall saw?

A walk-behind floor saw cuts vertically downward into horizontal surfaces — floors, roads, parking lots — to a depth of 120-350 mm depending on blade diameter (350-1000 mm). A wall saw is mounted on a track on a wall and cuts vertically to a depth of 300-700 mm — for door and window openings, lift shafts. Floor saws are cheaper (EUR 2,000-7,000) and simpler to operate but limited in depth. Wall saws cost EUR 12,000-35,000 and handle thicker reinforced concrete walls (up to 700 mm in a single pass).

Which diamond blade for asphalt and which for concrete?

For asphalt, use laser-welded blades with a hard bond — asphalt is soft and sticky, a soft bond would clog the segments (lifespan 300-600 m²). For concrete, use sintered blades with a soft metal bond — concrete is hard and abrasive, the soft bond exposes fresh diamonds as it wears (lifespan 200-400 m²). For green concrete (Soff-Cut, up to 2 h after pouring) use a dedicated dry-cutting blade with open segment structure. Mixing blades (e.g. concrete blade in asphalt) shortens lifespan 3-5x.

What cutting depth is achievable with 350, 500 and 800 mm blades?

Practical cutting depth is around 40-42% of the blade diameter — the rest stays inside the guard and flange. Specific values: 350 mm blade — cuts to 120 mm (e.g. Beton Trowel BTCS 350), 500 mm blade — up to 200 mm (Norton CS 502, Toolsa TFS 500, Belle Guardian 500), 800 mm blade — up to 320 mm (Tyrolit FSE 808, Husqvarna FS 524), 1000 mm blade — up to 400 mm (specialist motorway models). For thicker floors, make two passes from both sides or use a wall saw.

Honda GX petrol or 400V electric — which to pick?

Choose petrol (Honda GX 270/390/690, 9-23 HP) if you work outdoors without grid access — roads, parking lots, construction sites. Honda GX is famous for 2,000+ hours of service life and reliable starting. Choose electric 400V (e.g. Tyrolit FSE 808, 11 kW) for halls, tunnels, underground parking — petrol exhaust is prohibited there (CO concentration limit 35 ppm/8h). Electric has lower noise (~95 dB(A) vs 105 dB(A) petrol) and lower operating cost, but requires a 400V/32A socket and limits mobility to cable reach (max 50 m).

Can Soff-Cut really cut concrete one hour after pouring?

Yes. The Husqvarna Soff-Cut 150 is designed to cut green concrete just 1-2 hours after pouring — before the concrete reaches 24-hour hardness. Traditional saws require 24-72 h of curing, during which concrete shrinks and cracks at uncontrolled spots. Soff-Cut creates expansion joints earlier, controlling where the concrete will crack. It's the standard at airports, motorways, industrial halls where controlled joints every 4-6 m are required by code. The machine runs dry (no water that would damage green concrete) with a patented skid plate pressing the substrate.

Are operator certifications required for a walk-behind concrete saw?

In Poland, no separate state certification is required to operate a walk-behind concrete or asphalt saw — it's not on the UDT (Office of Technical Inspection) list of regulated machines. However, the following are required: workplace OHS training (employer-issued safety instructions), personal protective equipment (helmet, goggles, hearing protection ≥25 dB SNR, P3 dust mask), and knowledge of the manufacturer's manual.
