Floor saws and walk-behind concrete & asphalt cutters — precision pavement cutting
A concrete saw in walk-behind / self-propelled configuration (also called a floor saw or asphalt cutter) is a professional cart-mounted machine with a Honda GX petrol engine or 400V electric motor and a 350-1000 mm diamond blade. It cuts concrete, asphalt, paving stone and industrial floors up to 350 mm deep in a single pass — expansion joints, pavement removal for utility work, road construction.
NORWIT.PL stocks three classes of machines for different work scopes:
- Self-propelled floor saws — for large surfaces, motorways, parking lots. Models: Tyrolit FSE 808 400V, Norton Clipper CS 502 LV (13 HP Honda), Husqvarna FS 524, Toolsa TFS 500, Altrad Belle Guardian 500.
- Push floor saws (non-driven) — lighter, mobile, for smaller jobs and joint cutting. Models: Beton Trowel BTCS 350 Honda GX 270, Beton Trowel BTCS 501.
- Soff-Cut early-entry saws — the only system that cuts green concrete just 1-2 hours after pouring, eliminating shrinkage cracks. Model: Husqvarna Soff-Cut 150.
All machines available in petrol versions (Honda GX 270/390, 9-13 HP) for off-grid work and electric 400V versions for halls and tunnels where exhaust fumes are prohibited. Norwit also supplies matched diamond blades for asphalt and blades for green concrete — the right blade choice determines productivity and tool life.

Soff-Cut early-entry saws — cutting green concrete (1-2 h after pouring)
| Model | Engine | Max blade | Cutting depth | Time after pouring | Advantages |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna Soff-Cut 150 | Honda GX 270 | 250 mm | up to 90 mm | 1-2 h | Eliminates shrinkage cracks; dry cutting (no water) |
Soff-Cut is a Husqvarna-patented technology with an upper blade guard — it cuts the green concrete before it hardens and cracks at uncontrolled locations. Industry standard for airports, motorways, industrial halls.
Concrete saw vs asphalt saw — what's the difference?
Contrary to common belief, it's the same machine — what differs is the diamond blade selection:
- Concrete blade — sintered diamond segments, soft metal bond. Cuts hard, abrasive material (rocky aggregate). Lifespan 200-400 m2.
- Asphalt blade — laser-welded segments, hard bond. Asphalt is soft but sticky — the bond must wear slowly to avoid clogging. Lifespan 300-600 m2.
- Green concrete blade (Soff-Cut) — special geometry, runs dry, no cooling water needed.
Bottom line: a single machine handles concrete, asphalt and paving stone — just swap the diamond blade matched to the material. Technology differences: an asphalt saw usually has a larger water tank (more intense cooling due to sticky debris), the rest of the construction is identical.
Petrol or electric — which concrete saw to choose?
| Criterion | Petrol (Honda GX) | Electric (400V) |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor / off-grid | ✓ ideal | ✗ requires generator |
| Hall / tunnel / enclosed space | ✗ exhaust CO/NOx | ✓ only acceptable option |
| Power | 9-23 HP (6.6-17 kW) | 5.5-15 kW |
| Noise | ~105 dB(A) | ~95 dB(A) |
| Mobility | ✓ full | Limited by cable reach |
| Operating cost | Fuel + oil + service | Lower (electricity only) |
Practical rule: road and outdoor construction crews choose petrol (motorways, parking lots, streets), hall and indoor contractors choose electric 400V (underground parking, warehouses, tunnels).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) — concrete and asphalt saws
How does a walk-behind floor saw differ from a wall saw?
A walk-behind floor saw cuts vertically downward into horizontal surfaces — floors, roads, parking lots — to a depth of 120-350 mm depending on blade diameter (350-1000 mm). A wall saw is mounted on a track on a wall and cuts vertically to a depth of 300-700 mm — for door and window openings, lift shafts. Floor saws are cheaper (EUR 2,000-7,000) and simpler to operate but limited in depth. Wall saws cost EUR 12,000-35,000 and handle thicker reinforced concrete walls (up to 700 mm in a single pass).
Which diamond blade for asphalt and which for concrete?
For asphalt, use laser-welded blades with a hard bond — asphalt is soft and sticky, a soft bond would clog the segments (lifespan 300-600 m2). For concrete, use sintered blades with a soft metal bond — concrete is hard and abrasive, the soft bond exposes fresh diamonds as it wears (lifespan 200-400 m2). For green concrete (Soff-Cut, up to 2 h after pouring) use a dedicated dry-cutting blade with open segment structure. Mixing blades (e.g. concrete blade in asphalt) shortens lifespan 3-5x.
What cutting depth is achievable with 350, 500 and 800 mm blades?
Practical cutting depth is around 40-42% of the blade diameter — the rest stays inside the guard and flange. Specific values: 350 mm blade — cuts to 120 mm (e.g. Beton Trowel BTCS 350), 500 mm blade — up to 200 mm (Norton CS 502, Toolsa TFS 500, Belle Guardian 500), 800 mm blade — up to 320 mm (Tyrolit FSE 808, Husqvarna FS 524), 1000 mm blade — up to 400 mm (specialist motorway models). For thicker floors, make two passes from both sides or use a wall saw.
Honda GX petrol or 400V electric — which to pick?
Choose petrol (Honda GX 270/390/690, 9-23 HP) if you work outdoors without grid access — roads, parking lots, construction sites. Honda GX is famous for 2,000+ hours of service life and reliable starting. Choose electric 400V (e.g. Tyrolit FSE 808, 11 kW) for halls, tunnels, underground parking — petrol exhaust is prohibited there (CO concentration limit 35 ppm/8h). Electric has lower noise (~95 dB(A) vs 105 dB(A) petrol) and lower operating cost, but requires a 400V/32A socket and limits mobility to cable reach (max 50 m).
Can Soff-Cut really cut concrete one hour after pouring?
Yes. The Husqvarna Soff-Cut 150 is designed to cut green concrete just 1-2 hours after pouring — before the concrete reaches 24-hour hardness. Traditional saws require 24-72 h of curing, during which concrete shrinks and cracks at uncontrolled spots. Soff-Cut creates expansion joints earlier, controlling where the concrete will crack. It's the standard at airports, motorways, industrial halls where controlled joints every 4-6 m are required by code. The machine runs dry (no water that would damage green concrete) with a patented skid plate pressing the substrate.
How much does a walk-behind concrete saw cost — buy or rent?
A professional walk-behind concrete saw costs EUR 1,800-12,000 net depending on power and blade — Beton Trowel BTCS 350 (350 mm blade) ca. EUR 1,800-2,800, Norton Clipper CS 502 LV / Toolsa TFS 500 (500 mm) ca. EUR 3,200-4,800, Husqvarna FS 524 / Tyrolit FSE 808 (800 mm) EUR 7,000-12,000. Daily rental is EUR 50-120 net. Break-even point for purchase: 40-60 days of annual use — above that buying pays back in 2-3 seasons. Companies regularly cutting expansion joints or doing road work always buy; one-off house construction makes more sense to rent.
Are operator certifications required for a walk-behind concrete saw?
In Poland, no separate state certification is required to operate a walk-behind concrete or asphalt saw — it's not on the UDT (Office of Technical Inspection) list of regulated machines. However, the following are required: workplace OHS training (employer-issued safety instructions), personal protective equipment (helmet, goggles, hearing protection ≥25 dB SNR, P3 dust mask), and knowledge of the manufacturer's manual. Manufacturers (Husqvarna, Tyrolit, Norton) require operator training — lack of training may void warranty. Reference standard: EN 13862 (requirements for floor saws).
How long can a diamond blade run continuously?
Continuous cutting with water cooling on a 350-500 mm blade lasts 30-60 minutes, after which 5-10 minutes of cooldown is recommended for the engine (Honda GX) and blade. The blade must be continuously water-cooled (10-50 l tank mounted on the machine, flow 4-8 l/min) — running a wet-cut blade dry will destroy the diamond segments in 5-10 minutes. The exception is Soff-Cut for green concrete, which runs dry thanks to special geometry and low RPM. Practical lifespan of a 500 mm blade: 200-400 m2 in concrete, 300-600 m2 in asphalt.
Which saw to choose for road work (asphalt, kerbs)?
For road work (asphalt, kerb cuts, cable trench routing), the typical choice is a petrol floor saw with Honda GX 390 (13 HP) and a 500 mm blade — provides 200 mm cutting depth in a single pass, mobility on open terrain, reliability over long jobs. Recommended models: Norton Clipper CS 502 LV (light 140 kg, proven in road work), Toolsa TFS 500 (best price/performance, Norwit-exclusive), Altrad Belle Guardian 500 (with large water tank for intensive asphalt cutting). For large motorway contracts: Husqvarna FS 524 (23 HP, 800 mm blade, 320 mm depth).
Does a walk-behind saw work for cutting paving stone?
Yes, but only for larger jobs (>50 m2 of cutting). For small projects (paved driveways, pathways), tile bench cutters or angle grinders with diamond blades are more practical — smaller, lighter, faster to set up. Walk-behind saws excel at cutting long straight lines: parking edges, road curves, fitting paving stone to kerbs. Best model for this use: Beton Trowel BTCS 350 (350 mm blade is enough for typical 80-100 mm paving, light at 95 kg). Recommended blade: concrete (hard bond), never asphalt — paving stone is harder than asphalt.
